Re: An Old Boat

Hmmmm, dunno, but i quite like that, maybe something in the sky lacking, try the same shot on a different day, i think storm clouds would really pull it together, or even full on fluffy white clouds, I know you cannot control that, but it does need some drama in the sky, then i would be fantastic, everything else makes for a great shot, i like the drab colours and composition.

Re: An Old Boat

I also think the sky has let you down. Maybe cropping would frame the shot better with the boat in the foreground and the right hand edge to line up with the end of the buildings on the horizon (i.e. cut out most of the sky and all the trees on the right) but keep the same ratio.

Re: An Old Boat

I am not saying anything wrong with it, but a better sky would put it in the great shot category , technically it is a great shot, just needs a revisit when the sky is better, nothing that cedmondson, can do about that apart from revisiting, and when the time is right, the same shot will have a big WOW factor, but that is only my humble opinion

I also think for a sunset a mirror lake would be required, however i like the ripples and a more stormy cloud scenario would suit, personally a sunset would make it little more than another sunset shot

Re: An Old Boat

Thanks for the comments. I think you're all right in saying the sky is weak and lets the picture down. In selecting the particular shot I posted, I think I lost sight of the light that made me stop in the first place. This is perhaps more like it...but again I welcome feedback good or bad.

@Vulkan - the location is Le Conquet, at the NW edge of Brittany. Not the sort of place you'd pass through UNLESS catching a boat to Ouessant. However you might recall PPing one of my shots taken about 100m from this image (over a year ago), but facing the opposite direction.

Re: An Old Boat

Potential in this shot. I'd crop the top and bottom and make it a pano style image, for me there is too much room around the subject which reduces it's imapct.

Re: An Old Boat

I agree with Steve - it;s the space around the boat that lets it down. Perhaps you could get some waders on and get a little closer. I like Steve's pano idea to.

Perhaps some subtle tonal changes could help bring emphasis back on to the subject - B/W might help too.

I'll pass on the waders - any further pointers on the subtle tonal changes??

Re: An Old Boat

I think it'll only work if you go mono, but some subtle midtone burning could help drive the eye into the boat. along the bottom of the frame, and across the sky - perhaps coupled with an ever-so-slight increase in the boats contrast.
