D300 scapes

Well I managed to get out last night to nash point to use the D300 for the first time with seascapes...I had about an hour there and these are the first out of the processing line.

Why not a D700 - all the advantages of the D3, but significantly cheaper, lighter, and probably more suited to your style of shooting.

Re: D300 scapes

#2 for me, #1 looks well oversharpened to me though it might be the resizing. #2 has a very nice feel to it as a nightscape though I would probably lighten the left hand top corner a touch.

Plus...........get a 5D or it's replacement

Re: D300 scapes

Great stuff, do like the pebbles in the foreground on #1 in particular. I'd go D700 and put the saving towards better glass to compliment it.

Re: D300 scapes

Not really ...just average sized Hands.
What I mean is...it feels comfy...Like most nikons to me anyway. Its really nice in the hands..Like you want to take proper pics with it

Like the differnce between the D80 and D300.

Anyway I have to convince the Mrs, that the perfectly good, brand new D300 needs to be sold.

I guess I'll get the ol' Materialistic speech again

If she starts on you, just tell her you are suffering from post natal blues and a new camera would be just the thing to snap you out it

Re: D300 scapes

Great composition on those shots.

If you have money to spend, invest in glass is my tip - in another year they will be giving D3's away with cornflakes but prime lenses will always be in demand.

Re: D300 scapes

I'd get a few lenses myself - but depending on what photography you like, you may already have that covered. Have you tried the d300+grip? I expected that combo to be a very similar size to the D3.

If you are thinking you want to go full frame and can get one for the price of a d700 (can you get me one?) Erm I mean, then maybe a D3 is the right choice. The Nikon 14-24 looks amazing and I imagine would fit in with what you enjoy. I think that lens was designed to go hand in hand with the D3 but works very well on the D300 (or so I've read).

Re: D300 scapes

Don't take a filter from what I've heard the 14-24, I guess you would have to go down the lee filter route, I'd probably sacrifice a bit of width and buy the 24-70 2.8, I guess you've always got the 17-35 2.8 as well.

Re: D300 scapes

I tend to agree with johnaalex on what to do with your spare cash

But on the subject of your pictures.....

First - fantastic!! A little over sharp, agreed, but great composition and use of long exposures.

Just a couple of questions if I may? What post-processing went into these shots. I only have a basic knowledge of Photoshop Elements and would be interested to know what (if anything) you did to the pics after you took the shots.

Whatever - I love 'em and would be verry pleased if I'd taken them myself

Re: D300 scapes

Great pics as always Vulkan.
Oh and buy a D3 buy a D3 buy a D3.... did I mention you should buy a D3?
Not seen or played with a D700 but the D3 is truely awesome, and im sure you could use it to its potential. Played with one myself and loved it, but there is NO way I can afford or persuade the fiancee that I need one.

Thanks not much to be honest..I used a couple of GND's on camera..in elements,Levels adjustments and general tidying up.

These new lenses 14-24 24-70 etc...are optimised for full frame right?

I know How lenses are affected by the crop factor, like putting A dx telephoto on full frame gives you less reach etc.

What happens when you put full frame lenses on crop bodies then?....say I go for the 24-70on the D300...Im losing edge coverage or something?
