I'll make this quick (ish).

I'm in the market for a telephoto (circa 400mm) for my Sony A700 (Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro (red-ring) will be offered in due course). My budget is circa $1000 U.S or £510.00. Currently on my shortlist are:

Sony SAL 70-300mm G SSM
Sigma 100-300mm EX DG HSM* IF F4 (+ Sigma 1.4x EX TC)
Sigma 50-500mm EX DG HSM* (BIGMA)

* HSM not available on Sony mount.

Does anyone have any comments on the above list and/or other suggestions for others within my budget? Required for aviation and motorsport. In fact, if you own any of the above, I would like your honest personal opinion(s).

Reviews on all are excellent.

Tamron 200-500 SP Di LD discounted due to focal length too long at short end.

I must assume no-one has either of the Sigma variants and/or Sony owners don't own the 70-300G SSM.
