10-22 at the seaside

A few pictures from a stroll along the sands at Glynde Gap near Bexhill with the Canon 10-22mm.

Wet feet time

Off to vote the natural way

Looking a bit over-saturated?

The outgoing tide makes fantastic patterns in the mud

And if you find the colour of mud depressing, should brighten up you screen if nothing else .

Thanks for looking, Malcolm

Re: 10-22 at the seaside

There's nothing wrong with them Malcom but they all sort of lack any interest.

Using an UWA is very hard unless your composition is excellent and you have to get down low aswell in most cases.

The problem I think is that the UWA has included everything at the expense of giving the viewer anything to look at.

Also that light looks very harsh and isn't really much good for photography as it doesn't throw any shadows which makes everything look flat.

UWA do take a fair bit of practice to crack so keep at it and I'm sure we'll be looking on in awe at your photos in no time at all

Re: 10-22 at the seaside

Hi Ally

Many thanks for posting your interesting reactions. The pictures deliberately tend towards the minimalist approach and probably have limited appeal as a result . The landscape is very simple so I composed to emphasise that and just used big natural shapes and avoided going for a conventional photographic style composition.

Seeing the pictures on screen has made me realise that they don't work particularly well at a small size, but projected on a 6 ft screen they look much more impressive.

Your advice about getting down low is a good general tip for beginners but I don't think its necessary in most cases; it all depends on the subject.

Interesting point you make about the light; it is a bit flat but on the other hand that allows the shapes of the pool, rocks, and man with his dog to stand out without the distraction of too many shadows. BTW, you may not be surpised to learn that one of my favourite painters is Mark Rothko .

Cheers, Malcolm

Sigma 10 -20mm at Whitby, verticals corrected has slightly distorted the pensioners on the seat.

Great lively shot which makes a nice contrast to my efforts. It illustrates what I love about the seaside; look inland and its all bustle, bright colours and full of (human) life, turn around and look seawards and there is a peace, big, expansive and simple shapes.

I like your composition, framing the people on the bench by the black railings and yellow telescope.
