Right I am new to Aperture and finding the best way how to do things

When importing pictures do you lot use the Aperture Library or leave the picture in the current location? I believe if you like in current location and when you edit the photo it does not create a stack to have a alteration picture next to it like it would if the picture was stored in the Library.

Also when I change exsposure who do i get the blue and red effect on picture to show me how much to adjust. I figured holding down apple key does it another way but what is the proper way?

Also which colour management do you use as mine dont seem to print out as good as it print out on Photoshop Elements

I let Aperture manage the library, personally I can't see the point of using Aperture but not have the file system managed as well...That is the major advantage of using a product like this and you don't risk creating broken links.

In order to show the highlights and dark areas just go to menu View and select Highlight hot/cold areas, or alternatively use option-shift-H

Colour management is set to system managed for me...

Ok so how do you backup all your photos that are within the aperture library? As i like to be able to backup the photos to my External HD but not as a Aperture library know what i mean? I just want to be able to back them up as you would would finding picture in the ficture folder

I will check my copy of Aperture later, but I'm sure it's as simple as selecting the photo's you want to back up then use the export option, this gives you the ability to export the original or convert to jpeg, tiff etc.

There may well be an easier way, but this seems to work for me.

That is indeed one way of doing it. But having them in an Aperture library by using the fault or even just use time-capsule is not that bad. Remember that you can easy view the contents of a package file by right clicking and showing the contents. It is nothing more than a way of saying to the UI to not show all the directories and folders by default....Nothing more and nothing less....It is all there, just hidden away to make it a nice and tidy package...

I usually copy the photo's from the camera to an external HDD (which is stored elsewhere, as RAW) I then import to Aperture as normal (stored on the iMac) then use the Vault and store that again on another HDD (same as Time Machine).

Simple answer is to import as raw into projects in Aperture library the normal way.I suspect you may be a former Windows user and are still trying to hang onto some of your old habits, putting things into folders in "My Pictures".
For back-up, I use Vault located on 1 external hard drive and use Backup on a regular scheduled basis to save onto another drive. The raw processing within Aperture 2 is now so sophisticated that I don't use anything else.

Ideally you should burn the raw images onto a CD right away before processing as you then have original "negatives" that you can return to if everything goes pear-shaped, but I'm not such a virtuous housekeeper and no doubt one day I'll regret it!
