Quick Q for you Nikonites

Hi All

Quick question for you Nikonites out there. One of my mates has a D40X with loads of DX lenses. However he's interested in that new D700 thingy, but isn't sure whether the DX lenses will work on the D700. Being a Canon chap, I haven't the foggiest...

Can anyone enlighten me (& him !!).

Cheers

I gather that when you fit a DX lens, it switches to cropped mode automatically. The viewfinder shows a frame inside the larger FF view, indicating the DX coverage.

I heard that the D700 drops to 5.2mp (or thereabouts) in order to use DX lenses.

Yep, it uses the centre portion of the 12MP sensor

Unless he's planning to sell the DX lenses I reckon the D300 would be a better investment for now. Always think with the D700 that the 2K for the camera is the tip of the iceberg, I'd only get one if I could afford the 24-70 2.8 to go with it.

Dazza, I agree although I am sure a 5meg file from a D700 will compare very well with a D40x I think the ability to crop an image would be better with a 12meg file from a D300 effectively giving you extra reach. Does that make sense?
