A new Canon camera - next week ?
So, my tip for the dual Nikon June 08 announcement was sound, though one camera one flash, you cant take that away from me considering when I posted it.
So here we are. Canon '5D Mark II' in what ever guise it is going to be called is being revealed next week as far as I am aware. Long meeting with Canon today as they are sponsoring us at the balloon fiesta in Bristol.
Hope this helps.
Pete.

Bah I hope its a 40D with the 5D sensor in it as a 7D and a 5DmkII @16mp as clean as the D700 for same money (and all the trick electronics).

Re: A new Canon camera - next week ?
Should be interesting to see the spec of this. They probably guessed what Nikon would do.
Will it be something to surprise, or a 40D with a FF sensor, Digic III etc?
The price could be interesting as well. With the 5D back at £1200+ now, I can't imagine a new one is going to be that. I'll go for £1700.

ooooooo that would be nice. As a 400D user the thought of FF in the size of the 400D or 40D makes me feel very excited
Oh no my wallet is starting to throb.. ( I said wallet )

Agreed,
The way I see it, if there's an announcement next week (particularly with it being so close to Nikon's unveiling of the D700) it could go one of two ways IMO
Scenario 1: Damage limitation "yep it's basically a FF 40D, but the longer we left this in R&D, the higher our users' expectations will be, and also the D700 will have had longer time to muscle into this niche market"
Scenario 2: Smug Canon "well, D700 is nice but check this out!"
My gut feeling is that if it was just going to be a FF 40D, they would have unveiled it prior to the D700 - announcing something like this so soon after the D700 would be a little desperate I think
Interesting times...
Would still snap up a FF 40D in a flash though

Re: A new Canon camera - next week ?
I think that the 'leaking' of the D700 was clever marketing by Nikon, after all you couldn't pay for advertising like the speculation it got for free, & they could judge a price people would pay by reading the forums etc. Canon knew this & maybe hurried up there new camera, having a month or so to sort out publicity & knowing they would not be too late, as the D700 was not available until the end of July, thus preventing people jumping ship, as I was about to, & maybe still will if the Canon is too dear.

Re: A new Canon camera - next week ?
I doubt the 40D replacement will have a FF sensor. It would force ameatures to purchase much more expensive FF glass and thus alienate them. The 40D replacement will most likely be an improved 10MP or 12MP crop sensor with better AF and high iso performance.

The 40D update will still be crop. However, the 5D update might be FF in a 40D form factor (like the D700 is effectively FX in a D300).

hmmm interesting, i hope it's the 5D replacement and out of my price range as a FF 40D replacement would be just too tempting...

Re: A new Canon camera - next week ?
A little while ago I looked at release dates of models in the various camera series to see when we could expect the next developments. The rule of thumb was 16 months for the smaller models and a little bit longer for the pro cameras. Based on the release date of the 40D and the 5D then I don't think anyone should expect a 50D until early 2009, but the 5D looks overdue for replacement. I speculate that this will be a competitor for the D700 with a full frame, and while it will have some of the features of the 40D (and the 1DsMkIII) such as live-view, I don't see why the body would be significantly smaller than the existing 5D or the D700 as they would still need the room for the FF sensor.
On the marketing if they can offer an equivalent spec (or any slight advantages) for anything less than 1999 then it would come accross as a decent coup.
The debate for me is whether they'll call it the 5DMkII or the 6D.
And then will the 50D not try to shadow the D90 and out perform it in a similar way in a while?
Nick

Re: A new Canon camera - next week ?
I hope it's a good one. I'm quite disappointed with Canon lately with all these Nikon releases making me think about jumping ship. If Canon released a D700 equivalent, I'd be a very happy man.

I still think the Canon lens line-up is superior; that's one reason I migrated from Nikon earlier this year. I was thinking about a D700, but there's a lack of good quality, constant aperture, mid-range zooms in the Nikon line for FF.

Lol. I just want to see what my next potential upgrade might be in the future A FF camera with 49 focus points does look good though

Re: A new Canon camera - next week ?
Well, any move by Canon to increase it's full frame line up has to be good. I'm perfectly happy with my 5D at the moment but it will be interesting to see what they come up with.
edit: I wouldn't know what to do with 49 focus points........I struggle with 1

5D is already a FF camera in a 20D body.
I want a direct 40D replacement with the 5D sensor (or updated) for at or less than a D300.

Re: A new Canon camera - next week ?
The 5d is selling for as low and $2345 here in Australia, while the 1ds3 is around $10k.
I'm in the market for a 1ds3 to supplement my 1d3, so I'm hoping the 5d succesor will be at least 16MP to hopefully bring down the 1ds3 price a bit more, either that or an updated 1ds to justify the extra dough. - It's bad enough that a AUS$900 450d has more MP than my AUS$6500 1d3.

Re: A new Canon camera - next week ?
we don't need a 40D replacement, its only just been released and still has a place in the lineup. We need a 5D replacement. What body thats in doesn't really matter - either a revised 5D, 40D or shrunken 1D, who cares? Its whats inside that counts.
BTW, when is that balloon fiesta? I'm down in Bristol most weeks so might try and time my trip to match.

Yeah, sure, but the point is that the crop line will continue, so a 40D replacement will not have a FF sensor, it will have a crop one, eg 50D, 60D etc. The 5D upgrade/replacemet should still be in the same form factor ie 'prosumer' body, but take some features from the 40D such as Live View, sensor cleaning etc. The replacement for the 40D won't be FF.

Re: A new Canon camera - next week ?
I might be speaking for my behind but I hope Canon don’t see this forum if what Pete says is true, Oh believe me I would love to see a new FF Canon, my 5d is at 70,000 shots so needs replacing in about 30,000 (6-8 months)
I do however feel Canon would take a dim view of this information, it would be interesting to see if they sponsor your balloon fiesta next year.

Hey,
Canons lips are sealed. Its speculation from me, nothing more, but what I think is going to happen based on recent events. In conclusion, if you are looking to stir it up then yes you are talking from the rear

Re: A new Canon camera - next week ?
I'd also add that both Canon and Nikon have a history of leaking details through web forums. It's a hugely powerful and free form of viral marketing.
Nothing like thousands of photographers waiting to hear what you're bringing out. And if someone hasn't signed an NDA then they're under no obligation to keep quiet.

plus if Canon wanted to keep things secret, they're hardly going to do the rounds telling retail all about it and still expect it to remain under wraps.

49 point AF seems like overkill for anyone other than a sports 'tog IMO, who the 5D has never been aimed at.
OK so the 9 points of the 40D wouldn't be enough to cover a full frame, but I don't see the need for any more than about 20 or they just wont get used.
It'll be interesting to see what Canon come up with if this is indeed the long awaited 5D mk2. With a bit of luck it'll be a giant killer in a similar way that the 5D was in it's time and also how the 40D stacked up against the 1D3.

Re: A new Canon camera - next week ?
Interesting point on the AF though - I have mine set to 51 point after trying with less points. I always felt like I was a little bit away from the point I wanted and would end up having to focus/recompose which I don't like to do, especially shooting close to wide open with primes. It's remarkably quick to get the one you want with a bit of practice. I've configured the centre button of the selection toggle to return to the centre point when pressed so I can get 'home' fast.

Re: A new Canon camera - next week ?
how do you tell it which one you want to use? Whenever I used all focus points on the 350d and later the 40D, it just picks the closest subject that falls on a focus point.
its fairly easy to choose one of nine with the little joystick, but how do you do it with 51!?

Re: A new Canon camera - next week ?
I use the toggle on the back to get the AF point where I want if I'm shooting something more static. Where something is moving then I'll use the dynamic AF and lock the point I want. After that the camera moves the AF point for me - very clever.
