I have recently tried out a lenses on my new EOS 400d. The make of the lense is EXAKTA and it is a 55 - 200mm lense. it fits the slr with no probs and auto focuses well. when you go to take the picture it works ok. When you go to chaeck the pic on the display a error 99 message is displayed. Has anyone else come across this problem, and if so how do i rectify the situation. Is the lense not compatable with this slr camera. The lense was bought on ebay and i do not know how old the lense is. Any info welcome.

Its probably not shutting down to the required f-stop. Many older 3rd party lenses will not work properly on the newer digital bodies. Could be dirty contacts - give them a clean - if it doesn't help I would put it back on Ebay and look for a modern Canon / Sigma / Tamron lens.

I had the same error why trying an older Sigma lens with my 400D, the manual says that Error 99 means the lens is not compatible with the body. Not sure whether anything can be done.

Err99 is more of a generic fault that other fault codes don't cover.

That's wierd because the manual states;

"Err 99 - This error may occur if you use a non-Canon lens and the camera or lens does not operate properly."

Kinda covers all eventualities I guess

i get this error code every now and again aswell

i've got a tamron 70-300 which i bought new from jessops about two months back. When i asked in store they seemed to think it was dirty contacts

You really should not. Although it is mainly a lens error and secondarily generic it is not meaning less

...Or faulty with intermittent disharmony of electronics with the body. They would say that if it meant returning it to them
Certainly it could indicate a Body fault but if it works, it could just as easily be an ignorable gremlin

I bought the body from a different shop to the lense. I might take it into the original shop and see what they think if you think it could be a body fault

It could.
My nephew returned his 400D after 2 months and got a replacement
and
I have a 350D body with similar fault: started with the a sigma lens and simply does it with all lenses now
Im yet to get it fixed
