Nikon D700 - the game's afoot

Soooo - after a couple of weeks of rumours surfacing and then resurfacing it appears that we're going to see a new Nikon announced 1st July.

We've seen alleged leaks of a D700 brochure, which Nikon have then refused to comment on aside from saying that yes, we do use that very print house for our brochures and they did the D3 ones.

We've seen a couple of alleged photos surface today (albeit with an 18-200mm attached by the looks of it)

We know that a Swedish journo has today confirmed Nikon had him sign an NDA until 1st July.

We know that the well-respected German magazine ProfiFoto have delayed their new issue to 1st July due to "Due to recent product innovations that are still so secret that professional photo does not even hint may, in what area and from which manufacturer the new products will come, the original publication date of the professional photo 1 July…." (Babelfish there, not me)

We know that Jacobs have announced a major new DSLR announcement for 1st July. We also know that they have a trade meeting with the manufacturer in question tomorrow (26th) at which point more could leak out.

I know that when I phoned a dealer yesterday to enquire (speaking to the chap who sorted my D3 and lenses for me) he did say that he couldn't say anything. He did, however, add me to the pre-order list for the camera he couldn't say anything about until 1st July. He also knows I don't have any Canon kit in case it might be a 5D II.

Time for Rummy to make his quote perhaps - 'Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns - the ones we don't know we don't know'.

Of course it could be a D3X which doesn't interest me at all. A smaller FF body though? I'd be all over it, as I suspect a few others here would (eh Scott?). It also looks like there will be a new SB-900 flash as well as some new lenses.

Re: Nikon D700 - the game's afoot

It's exciting, I agree. Whichever camp you sit in, I think it's good news if it is a FF in a 'prosumer' body. Roll on next week !

I'd wondered before if the D700 nomenclature could be correct, but I see it makes sense now - it gives room for a D400-D600 DX line, and also a D800, D900 etc FX line.

Re: Nikon D700 - the game's afoot

I think it would really shake the market about if they did release a competitively priced FF body, it would certainly put Canon on their heels which can only be good for the consumer in the long run.

By the way, thats a great price for the 70-200 /2.8 IS.

Re: Nikon D700 - the game's afoot

If it is a new FX sensor camera then we might expect a new 70-200 f2.8 VR II lens to go with it.

If true I reckon if they come in around £1500 for this it will be a good price.

I understand it's $2999, so it just depends how well the UK does.

Yeah, maybe non-disclosure agreements don't extend to the Danes

I do like the premise of a FF sensor in a prosumer body though; the final thing holding me back from moving from film to digital is the lack of a pop-up flash in the 5D (useful for a bit of fill-in when taking the Speedlite isn't practical). If this prompts Canon to release a next-gen 40D (50D???) with full-frame and eye-control focus () I'll be at the front of the queue!

Re: Nikon D700 - the game's afoot

Really surprised this camera is looking to arrive before a D80 replacement. Seem to definitely be concentrating on the high end Nikon. Very steep financial upgrade path trading in say a D40/x or D60/D80 for a D300 upwards.

I'll definitely be in the market for one of these if the price is right, but will probably wait a few months for the price to settle.

Re: Nikon D700 - the game's afoot

If Nikon update the 24-120 VR (I had heard rumours of this), and that updated lens and a FF D3/D300 hybrid are available before an updated 5D, I may be inclined to switch back (especially if the 70-200 2.8 VR is tweaked as well). Would probably wait for a little while though for prices to settle - it was interesting to see how quickly the D300 dropped actually - 3/4 months should see a nice saving, but I guess it depends on how much it is in the first place. Anything above £2k and that might be me out.

Re: Nikon D700 - the game's afoot

Bought my D300 for £1060 in January, they now seem to be going for about £960 so it's come down £100 in about six month, not 100% sure how much they were when they first come out?

Lens wise I'd like to see something like 17/18-55 2.8 non DX come out, would be great for landscapes. I think the 17-35mm 2.8 has been around for nearly a decade now so must be ripe for some sort of replacement.

Re: Nikon D700 - the game's afoot

Just met with Nikon in person who let slip that the new camera is ideal with the new lenses, ergo the 24-70 nano, which indicates full frame. He would say no more, even over a large breakfast

All my money is on a D700 now but I have a tenner on revised D3 though the vernacular is 'new' camera, not updated or upgraded.

Pete.

Re: Nikon D700 - the game's afoot

I reckon it's 70/30 between the D700 and D3x. Both full frame, both 'new' (D3x with that new huge Sony sensor?), and certainly the D3x has been long predicted for mid year.

We are supposed to be getting 2 new bodies right, so should still get a D90.

And Yandros, I'll give you 7-3 on it being a D3x instead of D700. What shall we say, £30/£70?

I think it's the D3x also, although a D700 would make me think long and hard about my Sony commitment.

Not that I'm in a position to migrate, but more longer term ideal if a similar D700?/5D camera doesn't come from the Sony camp.

Let's see a nice 24120VR f4 as well...

Hard to why they'd revise the D3 already though...

It'll be a long wait though - a higher res body like that isn't of any interest to me at all.

Re: Nikon D700 - the game's afoot

Not that into the old canon v Nikon thing, its just i started with a 400D and just stuck with what i know and not to waste my canon lenses.
But reading about the D700 and even the D3 (X or not) really makes me think that there are going to be alot of people looking at Nikon first, i know i am and im only a hobbyist who is starting to take photography a bit more $eriou$ly.

And from seeing your pics Radiohead, im very impressed with the performance, though maybe for me, a few more paid gigs would be needed before i decide.

OT slighty, watching the tennis there was ALOT of D3's being used by the pro's.

I don't think it's a matter of revising, I gather we're looking at a D2h vs D2x situation, ie D3 is the 1DMkIII 'sports shooter' segment, and the D3x would try to capture the 1DsMkIII 'studio' segment

I would hope it would be less than £2k, maybe $3k in the states. I'm really tempted by the idea - I'd quite like a DX vs FX thread (not brand specific) - lots of advantages for FX, except the range, and telephoto lenses aren't cheap.

Re: Nikon D700 - the game's afoot

Wow! This disappeared to the second page!

Not sure if these prices are true..

The link now shows no prices..

If the price was right, that will be SRP of £2162. A lot cheaper than a D3, but not as cheap as people would like. But I assume this will always be the case.

Price will probably drop after a few months and also once the Canon 5Dmk2 arrives. Talking about the 5Dmk2, popped to one of the Bristol shops today (not Bristol Camera's before anyone asks!), and he seemed to think the 5Dmk2 will be announced in about 1 month, and available to buy by about Septermber. Not sure how much truth there is in that, since this might be a guess like we all would guess.

I'd say that was a little too high.

It's not significantly cheaper than the D3, and I would guess they'd want to come in under the 2k mark. My guess would be about £1899 - dropping to the £1500 mark within a 4 or 5 months.
