Name that Flower

I thought I would create a thread for people wanting to find the names of flowers that they have taken pictures of.

I am looking for the name of this pink one. I don't think it is a geranium, but I could be wrong.

Re: Name that Flower

The first one is a Pelargonium (sometimes called a Geranium) and the second appears to be a variety of Tulip.

Both are cracking shots.

Re: Name that Flower

After a quick google search for "Pelargonium " it looks like is call "Pelargonium Rodneyanum" with a common name of "Magenta Storksbill", native of Australia. Presumably named after some bloke called Rodney.

The first one is Plumbago, but the other two have me beat. That last one is really exotic looking. Nice shots though

[QUOTE=sockpuppetuk;7259445]Oh, I had this one labelled as a Gazania.

I think they might both be Gazanias of different varieties. Have a look here The leaves are also helpful in IDing plants, so maybe try and include some if possible.

Yes, shield bug, although I can't find this species in my guide, was it taken in the UK?.
The plant seems to be fennel.

Nope definitely not a passion flower.

Shows we've got not a proper gardner amongst us (my mother would be horrified that none of us had a clue!) A quick flick through a gardening book and I can tell you that it's actually not that exotic - it's a fairly common as muck annual "love-in-a-mist" - Nigella damascena.

That's the one thanks.
Didn't think it was that exotic as they grow like weeds here.

Thought this was quite a good one of it though, taken with a £30 macro lens I won on Ebay.

No, it was in France. I'd just got my camera and was going a bit crazy with the macro there was so much around whilst out walking. Here's a nice bee orchid (so technically off topic) I took at the same time:

I'm not that good on plants though, so not sure what this butterfly is on:

I like the shot, and since I've already veered off topic, here's the other side of the butterfly (I can recognise the buttercup):

Both right, thanks. With that info, I've tracked it down. It is a shield bug, or stink bug, in fact a Graphosoma lineatum or Red & Black Striped Stink Bug

Thanks.

Not so hot on wildflowers, but the butterfly looks like a Silver studded Blue. Well done on getting it with its wings open, they hardly ever open their wings when they are sitting.

Thanks, it was flying around a lot and landing and taking off. I got a lot of shots of places it had been before I got this! Quite like it too.

Mike P - that looks like a honeysuckle but there are so many varieties around, I run out of details there.

Agree that GPA's first shot is a daylily

Re: Name that Flower

Agreed with Theo, honeysuckle.

The holes in the base of the flowers are made by bees. They can't get to the nectar at the base of the flower because thier mouthparts are not long enough, so they make a hole and suck it out as this carpenter bee is doing.
