Calling Bristol Pete - is the Nikon D700 for real?

Can you tap up your industry sources to whether there's anything in this. The snapper claims to work in the print house that also did the D3 PR guff:

Re: Calling Bristol Pete - is the Nikon D700 for real?

Reading it again - the supporting copy doesn't seem to be very Nikon-like. .

"contributing to image depth that is simply not possible in lesser cameras"

That doesn't sound like the work of a Nikon copy writer.

Still - the D700 name sort of makes sense, and they need a camera at this spec level.

Re: Calling Bristol Pete - is the Nikon D700 for real?

It looks too elaborate to be a hoax, but the nomenclature doesn't seem to make sense to me - if it's a 'cut down' D3, why not the D4/D5 etc ? If it's essentially a D300 suped up with FX, why not D400 etc? The only thing I can think of is that either it's fake, or it's called the D700 becuase there are also going to be some neat things in betwen it and the D300.

Seems like the right time though; Nikon have been on a roll with the D300/D3, and it seems obvious that they would bring out a more 'affordable' full frame. I just hopes this makes Canon move a bit on the 5D upgrade (and hope it's not trumped before it's even out!).

I've not read it yet, but I would say if someone has gone to the effort of making something fake, when we are all expecting Nikon to announce 2 new bodies, you'd have thought they'd have posted it before now, as we were expecting Nikon to have made their announcement a week ago (ie, their fake work will become worthless once Nikon make their announcement, so why not post it 2 weeks ago).

Re: Calling Bristol Pete - is the Nikon D700 for real?

Looking at the picture of the camera, it looks to me as though it has a flash assist lamp to the left of the 'Nikon' as you look at it. If it's FF, and presumably with no on-board flash to accommodate a larger VF, why would it have that ?

Some of the pictures make it look like it has a pop up flash though.

However, It also seems to have the D200/D2X style sync and port covers. Why would Nikon go back to a design they dropped in favour of the rubber style ones on the D3/300

It seems to be mix of D3 D300 and D200 - which along with the dodgy copy, screams fake.

Hope I'm wrong though

Not sure - that picture looks to show no pop-up flash to me; I can't see a join anywhere.

It looks like the covers do have small arms going around the side (a la D300/D3), but they're certainly different.

The D700 just seems to be squeezed in too much in the position it's in as well.

It would be nice to see though (and if this isn't it, it's only got to be a short matter of time).

Re: Calling Bristol Pete - is the Nikon D700 for real?

It's a good point, that is a flash assist lamp. It has a curved line above 'Nikon', like the D300, which could be a flash, or just part of the build. It is a big viewfinder, I don't know if there'd be room or not?

Re: Calling Bristol Pete - is the Nikon D700 for real?

All those captures of magazine/leaflet pages just look soooo kosher though. Maybe I'm just jaded because of all the incorrect 5DmkII rumours that come to nothing!

Oh yes, I can see that now, my eyes are getting bad.
