No 3 is especially good IMO. I'd have a print of that on my wall.

To shoot a sea/skyscape without a focal point such as a boat or a bird and manage to make it interesting can't be easy. Was there any post processing?

No. 2 does it for me. You captured the gull in just the right place!

Nice shots, and I like them all, but a lack of foreground interest is killing number 3 for me.....love the sky, good use of the rule of thirds, well exposed, but just a bit.....flat.....I suppose is the best word.

Also, on #2, the boat kind of merges in with the row of houses in the background [same height, similar colours], and therefore doesn't really jump out as an isolated subject. Bot sure how you'd get round this one, other than perhaps a smaller f/number to isolate the subject, or perhaps getting lower down for a more isolating angle of the boat.

I'm no pro mind, so take it all with a pinch of salt.

Not a great deal of post processing on #3, Used the auto function in camera raw to start with and changed the white balance to "cloudy" which gave the colours a bit more vibrance. Tweaked the levels a bit to enhance the white in the clouds as well.

This is the original prior to cropping, do you feel compositionally this works better?

Took the new tamrom 17-50 out for a test run yesterday, could be in my own mind but it does seem a sharper lens than my 18-70mm DX which the other pics in this thread were taken with :

Have to agree - for such a simple shot, there is plenty to hold the eye!

What's important is that you think they're sharper.

I can't see a massive difference. All I can say is that mine has shown itself to be absolutely spot on when I use it properly. Certainly as sharp as I was expecting after the hype. The AF can be a bit frustrating at times (noise, bit pedestrian), but no big thing.

Also had the front come a bit loose on mine but found the prob on another forum and fixed it myself no worries. If it happens to you let me know.

I like #1 as it is very unusual, and the last one is a very good "suck you in" pick through the gap and down to the sea. Nicely done.

#2 is too overexposed for me and a bit cluttered. Maybe if you'd gone in closer and got some detail you'd have made more from the scene. I often find that I get more in close than capturing the subject as a whole.

#3 is very minimalist. Nice sky, and the sea looks inviting.
