£250 to spend on a lens

can anyone help, im looking for a 70-300mm zoom lens for my canon 450d. want to spent around £250 for a half decent one. ive seen canon do a lovely 70-300mm is usm lens but its around £100 more than i want to spend.
any ideas, cheers.

Well, not 70-300mm of course, but the Canon 55-250mm IS is well within your budget, and is excellent for the price. Not seen a bad review.

Regarding the 55-250 - from what I checked last night, theres very little difference between 250 and 300 with regards to just how close up you can get.

that's correct, not a huge difference

i've got the 55-250IS and it's a great lens for the money (£170) and it's a lot more compact than the 70-300IS. I think the 55-250 would be a better walkabout lens as the focal range starts at 55 rather than 70

Save some pennies and get yourself a 70-200F4L. They usually go for around £300 s/h and will easily see off the 70-300.

If you can stretch to the 70-300 IS USM (with cashback), then I would certainly recommmend it - mine is superb!
