Got a Hoya R72 Infrared filter

Hello

I have wanted to try infra red for some time and today I received a Hoya R72 bought on the Classifieds section (thanks AlistairW!)

I tried it out at lunchtime today, here is the first effort.

I processed it using the common red & blue channel swap method followed by a reduction of the red (-85%) and magenta (-45%) saturation as per this method which AlistairW very kindly sent me.

Looks a bit bland compared to a lot of IR shots I've seen - probably needs some blue sky or other colours, or more advanced post-processing.

The same shot but converted to mono and toned.

Any comments welcome, as are any IR processing tips or techniques anyone can share.

Cheers

Re: Got a Hoya R72 Infrared filter

I think I know what's wrong with that shot... I blew out the RED channel.
Had another go this time I reduced the exposure in camera RAW.

This is more what I was expecting as a baseline IR channel swap.

Another shot of the same bench but further along the iron fence.
The red channel histogram was spot on in this one.
This time I adjusted the white balance by clicking the eyedropper on one of the leaves on the tree in the foreground.
I didn't do a channel swap.

Interesting stuff!

Re: Got a Hoya R72 Infrared filter

Could this be the end result I'm after?

Added a red & blue channel swap.

Re: Got a Hoya R72 Infrared filter

Ive had the hoya R72 for a few months now but havent really got as many shots with it as I would have liked.
The processing can be quite tricky but I think youve done alright here dave.

The trick is getting the greens white then your in the realms of having these dream like shots.

These are maybe a tad underexposed.

Heres a couple That I did a while back

and a color

If youve got no objections hosting the Raw on media fire I like to have a go at one of yours

great first attempts

Re: Got a Hoya R72 Infrared filter

I think your shot looks great Alex, I remember seeing it ages ago.

If you don't mind having go at them I'm sure you can do better and I'll hopefully learn something.

Let me know what to do for media fire.

Thanks Dave. Quite pleased with this find, it's a few mins from my work in the New Town (Stockbridge). It's one of those 'Private' Gardens and really well tended. I have a few ideas for this spot.

Re: Got a Hoya R72 Infrared filter

Interesting stuff Dave. Personally i prefer the B&W toned ones to colour. But very interesting.

I do agree they`re Marmite though.

Re: Got a Hoya R72 Infrared filter

Grabbed a couple more IR shots earlier before we went out for Mrs 159's pre-marathon pasta carb-loading frenzy.

Re: Got a Hoya R72 Infrared filter

First one is great I think the soft leaves make it. I assume it was as windy up there as is it down here.

Re: Got a Hoya R72 Infrared filter

Sorry dave been busy.
I think the last two you did were very nice.

anyway had a quick play.

Both Raws had white balance changed by clicking on an area that shoud have been green. Then opened in Cs3 and in channel mixer changed the red channel to -100 and +100 and in the blue channel +100 in the red slder and -100 in the blue.

I then adjusted the levels to bring the exposure up a tad....and adjusted the temp on the second

Dont know if thats what you were after

Re: Got a Hoya R72 Infrared filter

Thanks Alex, I like the first one a lot.

A bit of experimentation gets really interesting results. I'll have to get stuck in to the colour saturation sliders in ACR.

Re: Got a Hoya R72 Infrared filter

The IR experiments continue.

Windy Churchyard - passed this in the car so pulled over for a minute and grabbed a shot with the G9.

Swapped the red and blue channels and also messed about with the reds in a selective colour layer.
