I am a little confused, i want the option of 8fps on my D300 but it seems you have to not only buy the Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D10 but also some sort of battery cover. Can someone confirm exactly what i need to ensure I get the option of 8fps when I order one of these.

To go to 8fps you need the MB-D10 and either the battery from the D3 (plus a cover) or use AA batteries.

Of course, you need a charger to go with the D3 battery so it ends up being quite expensive. However, as just a grip the D10 is very good.

I think it is the cover i am getting confused with. so i have two questions.

The charger is the same for all three batteries i currently have(IE I charged my d300 nicad in my D80 charger)

1.The cover you are talking about, do you have a part No for it
2. I now have 3 nicads one from my D80 and 1 from my 300 and a spare thrown in to the deal when i bought my 300. Can I run the camera just from the grip ? IE with no battery in camera itself.

The battery cover is part number BL-3. You need EN-EL4 or EN-EL4a battery to use the cover.

The camera will work with just a battery in the grip.

Just to clarify further. If you go the ENEL4 / ENEL4a route, you need to buy the cover (BL-3) and a charger for the ENEL4(a) battery.

The ENEL4(a) chargers are either the MH-21 (around £120) or the MH-22 (around £180). So it's pretty expensive to go this route.

The MB-D10 will work at 8fps with standard AAs, so this is by far the cheapest method. There is an AA battery adaptor included with the MB-D10, you do not need the BL-3 to use AA batteries.

So can I get 8fps with my EL3's and the MB-D10

Nope. If you use EL3e batteries you'll only get 6fps. 8fps is with AA or ENEL4(a) batteries only.

What a bl--dy con! the price of the MB-D10 and the cost of new batteries and charger, plus the cover

Aye. It's around 450 quid to get a fully equipped MB-D10, and that's without a spare EN-EL4a. You can get a lot of AAs for the extra money. In my experience so far, you can probably get a couple of thousand shots out of AAs, so it's a pretty viable option.

Allegedly as the AAs drop in power, so does the frame rate. The EN-EL4a option stays at full 8fps until the battery is fully discharged. That's the only thing you need to be aware of.

It's a bit of a minefield
