Just the one from Today

Haven't done any of these Long Exposures for a while, taken with the 10-20 with the B&W (106) + CPL :

All comments and criticisms welcome

Re: Just the one from Today

I'm not quite too sure what to think on this one...

As a landscape it doesn't work as there is not enough of the surrounding to tell whether this is the sea or what? Also the sky, being totally blown, just detracts from the image. If you had composed without it you could have got a much stronger graphic image.

The water and rocks are very nice though. The composition just feels a little 'awkward'

Re: Just the one from Today

I like it Darren. I agree it would be better if you also used a grad to bring out some tonal detail in the sky. The smokey water is very nice.

I like the foreground, or the bottom half to be more precise...what's it like in colour?

Re: Just the one from Today

I agree with Ally, but now you've shown the uncropped version, I can see why it looked awkward.

I much prefer the second one, but you need to try and bring that sky back. Did you shoot in RAW, have you tired a little highlight recovery?

Re: Just the one from Today

I prefer the uncropped too. I'd be inclined to crop it just above the jagged rock to the right of the centre and get rid of the cliff altogether, keeping it more focused on the foreground and losing nearly all the sky.

Just my preference.

Re: Just the one from Today

You've got the potential for some truley amazing lead in lines there...

I think what you needed to do was move about 3paces to the left, half the height of the tripod and look down the lines of the rock (or almost down them). Bacically all this is just to point the camera more to the right while making more use of those stunning rock formations.

That would remove firstly the rock that peeps into frame on the top left, and secondly remove most, if not all, of that cliff, which, beacuse of the building does not look good in the composition.

I'd also urge you to try and crop as little as possible in post processing. (the only time I ever crop an image is to change the aspect ratio). It will help you make the most of the scene you have infront of you and will help your compositions no end.

I did shoot in Raw, and I think there might be potential with what you've suggested to get a better sky in shot. The location is within walking distance of where I live so I'm intending to pop back and use the advice given by everyone to get some better shots, in July you get the sun set in this location as well.

Re: Just the one from Today

That looks like an amazing location. Some excellent rock formations to work on.

The second shot is better than the first one IMHO. It shows the environment better. I think you have a lot of potential at that spot - yes you blew out the sky but hopefully you can get back there and re-shoot with different lighting and get some realy quality pics.
