Question Need rec for a good telephoto lens and flash for 400D?

I am learning my new 400D purchased on the recommendation of this forum. So far in addition to the kit lens I have the 50mm Canon lens and a 28-135mm zoom lens.
One issue I keep running into is that skin tones come out too brown indoors whereas they are fine outdoors with the 28-135mm (portraits). Do I need an additional flash? I really need to read a photography book as well.

I need a telephoto lens for taking pictures at my kids school plays, sports days etc. 135mm is not enough. I am assuming I will need a flash to go along with it?

And also a bag to keep all the lenses and the camera. My current little bag only fits the camera plus the kit lens.

Please recommend some reasonably priced ones.

Thanks

Hello there

There are a couple of flashes you can get for the 400d

Canon 430EX Speedlite

Canon 580EX II Speedlite

There are some ring tyoes as well and some 3rd party ones that will work with the Canon.

As for telephoto you don't mention any budget or length you want to zoom too.

Here are two I think are worth looking at.

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

If you let us know a buget we may be able to narrow it down a bit and a few more details.

Understanding Exposure is a good book to get started with

Hope this helps.

Cheers Holo

Re: Need rec for a good telephoto lens and flash for 400D?

Can't argue with Holo's shortlist. I know from experience and restricted budget the Sigma 70-300 he listed works for me with my aviation shots. I bought one from OSD as have many others on this forum. The macro isn't to shabby either!

As for flash, an external flashgun will transform indoor shots no-end, though the Canoneers would advise what make/model (subject to budget) would be most apt.

I have a 3rd party flashgun with a sto-fen type diffuser and a lightsphere (I use the 2 together for portraits and other close-up work - they fit inside each other). Double diffusion. Works well for me. Then what do I know?
