the band...

Hi all,

I recently photographed a great local Bournemouth band called "The Goodfoot Band". I know one of the members and he along with the other members kindly allowed me to shoot them while they played in the 1812 club in town. I'm studying C&G level 2 but this was the first time I've done photo's in anything like this situation. I had 45 minutes to take them and well, here are my efforts that I'd like you all to have a look at. I'm under no illusion of being that good or anything and the reason I'm posting them is to get some tips and ideas and just general feedback to be honest. Please feel free to be as honest and critical as you like because that really is the only way I will learn what I'm doing wrong. Thanks everyone.

Re: the band...

Some nice shots there, not a bad first attempt I reckon

Quite hard to comment on individuals - if you have a flickr site you could embed them in your posts and number them for easier individual feedback.

Some of them have quite hard shadows - which look like they may have come from your flash? You could try bouncing it to minimise that effect.

You've got some nice varied angles and shots. Just stick at it and keep practising is all I would suggest unless you have any specific questions about camera settings/technique you want to throw at the forum.

Re: the band...

Some good ones in their I think.
Like onefivenine, I like the way you've tried to mix up the angles. I'm also fascinated by the minimalist drum set in use.

EXIF data might be useful for more feedback. Another advantage to a flickr account.

I think one of the reasons you're not getting many posts is simply down to the way you've presented the pics. Having to click on each one to see it along with there being quite a few. Do a search for how to embed from flickr (or other hosting site)and have a think about editing your post to change them to embedded so they can be viewed more easily and you may get a bit more feedback.

Re: the band...

I am by no means an expert here, but having looked at the pics there is nothing there that grabs my attention as being a great shot. Maybe a bit more thought on composition (not having the drummer's face obscured by the kit), more shallow DOF on the shot of the sax and drum kit to emphasise one of them and the blue background in one shot does not work for me at all. Having said that I doubt if I would have done much, if any, better.

Ok, here's a few comments. Please don't assume I could have done any better !

Left to right, top to bottom:

1 - May crop to the right showing more of the sax ?
2 - looks a little out of focus
3 - Nice, caught the pose. I wonder if bringing out the shadow more would ruin the vibe ?
4 - Focus again and the flash looks quite harsh
5 - Mic is obscuring his face
6 - Thats a nice shot, maybe too much flash reflection in the bass drum ?
7 - Nice angle, just missed the shot with stick obscuring face
8 - A nice shot - maybe my favorite
9 - Ok, would have been better with the drummer in shot
10 - Nice pose, maybe crop to the left ?
11 - This *is* my favourite. Nice.
12 - A little off focus
13 - Nice framing and good pose. I'd be itching to try and bring up the shadows (probably missing the point of the mood)
14 - Not a great facial expression
15 - Great framing, great shot. Just wondered if there was anyway you could have also got the guitarist in shot ?
16 - Tamborine just slightly obscures singers face.
17 - Another great pose. Wondered about getting the guitarist in again ?
18 & 19 I'd have preferred more straight on catching more of her face.

HTH. As a sad old git I probably missed the point of you're vibe with these shots. Harsh direct flash would be my main comment it would be great to experiment with off-camera flash. Hopefuly as a punter looking at them cold, comments may be of help..

Cheers

T
