I know there are various methods of correcting poor exposures PP, but after a search on google i came across this tutorial:

It seems to have an advantage over raising curves/ levels etc in that it doesn't blow out the highlights. I am not sure if there is much difference in it and Highlight/Shadows tool.

I tried this last night on a night shot of a lit building and on a backlit daylit portrait taken outside (foreground very dark).

I was impressed with the outcome, and the fact that no matter how much i turned up the brightness using this method, it only brightened the dark to light areas proprtionally, ensuring no blown highlights.

Are there any other similar methods which people use which also provide good results??

Yep, if you're a Nikon shooter - shoot RAW and use Capture NX.

You've then got +/-2ev exposure compensation As with half of the NX features, it's some kind of voodoo magic trick (extrapolating data from the other colour channels?)...but it works! Unless you've been particularly hamfisted with your in-camera exposure you can rescue pretty much any lost detail.

Agreed, NX is fantastic for any RAW Nikon images.
