Are 35mm SLR`s worth anything now days?

.......... And do people still use them?

I have an old Nikon F301 body (with the AA batt bottom end) and a tokina 100-300 zoom, a hoya 24mm and a vivitar 28-70 lense. A couple of filters and a hanimax flash.

It`s been sitting on a shelf (in a case) gathering dust for ages now. I just wondered if any of you camera buffs could suggest if it`s worth trying to sell it or not, and if it is, what sort of price should i be looking for.

Mods: I`m only asking this question as i have absolutely no idea if it`s even worth selling.

Re: Are 35mm SLR`s worth anything now days?

I think anything is worth selling personally if you don't feel you'll have a use for it again. I've sold two games consoles recently as I realised I'd never get the time to really play them again. Had a quick look on Ebay at the completed listings and a camera like yours with lenses etc sold for about £60. That's what I'd do if I was unsure what to price something, put it on Ebay and it will find a value (what I've done with both consoles I've sold recently).

Re: Are 35mm SLR`s worth anything now days?

Fleabay's odd and seems ebb & flow. I've got a Canon AE-1 setup that I want to "realise the value" of (body, 2 Sigma zooms, flash and a handful of Cokin filters).

In November / December, fairly average setups were hitting nearly £100 but since then the market seems to have dropped. One auction I watched for a better setup than mine failed to sell with a starting bid of £99 and again with a starting bid of £75. I know there's a bit of psychology around high opening bids, but ultimately if it doesn't sell, it doesn't sell.

I listed my setup with a start bid of £25 and had no bids with about 12 hours to go. Ultimately, I closed the auction with the item unsold because I wanted to look into what it's worth a little more.

I'm going to take the whole setup in to a couple of camera shops when I get a chance and see if they'll give me anything for it (either cash or trade-in).

The depreciation on cameras seems almost as bad as AV stuff and cars

Re: Are 35mm SLR`s worth anything now days?

Well, TBH, I still use my film camera. I always have it in my bag because it accepts all my lenses with AF. There is great satisfaction to take your photos back from the lab and not remembering exactly what photos you took. It takes me about a month to use a film of 36 so it's great to look through the photos for the first time. And because I have access to a dark room I use black and white film aswell. I prefer that experience than any software.
I am actually looking for an EOS 5 now. It's an amazing camera for a fraction of the price of high end digitals.

Wrong, depends what you bought and when you bought it

During the great Russian Rangefinder throwaway period I bought a couple of dozen Kievs, FEDs and Zorki's and maybe a score of lens and I would definitely expect more than I paid for them.

Those 111C's Summitars dont seem to be dropping in price either - the bottom photo isn't mine, the half race ones have a stepped plate near the rewind knob.

Re: Are 35mm SLR`s worth anything now days?

I picked up a Dynax 7 and VG to compliment my Dynax 7D (digital version) - seeing it as a backup and wanting to play about with film.

A year on I've used it about 4 times, one of which was when my 7D was in repair and I had no choice.

Film, while lovely when you get it right, is just such a hassle! Not sure what to do now, could get about £150 back, but I've got a feeling I might keep it, just in case... It does interesting things to your lenses too - my 20mm prime is a real 20mm prime again - very wide. And my 135mm is interesting at 135mm - I do think I prefer it at 200mm though.

Re: Are 35mm SLR`s worth anything now days?

I went to a "camera fair" yesterday. To be honest, with the exception of a couple of stalls it was generally made up of people selling knackered old junk at seemingly quite high prices.

If you were a collector I'm sure you could find some stuff you were interested in (there were quite a few Leicas for example), or if you wanted a specific rubber lens hood type thing for a specific lens you'd probably find it.

There was one stall selling Canon & Nikon 2nd hand "modern" kit and I nearly pulled the trigger on a 16-35 f2.8 but figured I could probably get a new one from Kerso for not much more.

You may want to try taking your stuff to one of these events and seeing if a dealer will buy it off you, but I reckon eBay is the best approach.
