Advice on taking night photos

Hi,

I need a bit of advice on taking photos at night.

We are going to Edinburgh in July and might be going to the Military Tattoo.

I will be taking my d40x, 18-55mm and SB400 light.

I am considering buying either the 55-200 or 18-200 sigma lens, so that I can take close up pictures. Will these lens be ok to take photos from the stands?
Do you recommend any other lens?

Any other advice on taking night photos welcomed.

Re: Advice on taking night photos

Take a tripod, its a must for night time landscapes where long exposures are the order of the day

These are all long exposure (20 secs upwards for the first and last) and would not be possible without one.

If you're saying that you'd like to take photos of moving subjects oudoors, from a distance, at night, with a very small flashgun...good luck, you'll need it

fast glass, very high ISO or a huuuge flashgun maybe? Anyone have any more constructive advice?

Biscuit761

Awesome pics!

Will take my tripod.

Yandros

The main attraction has huge floodlights lighting the area, hopefully that will allow some decent photo's.

Regarding fast glass, will any of the telephoto lens I have listed be ok?

If you want night shots of the tattoo best bet is to try and find out what day its being recorded for TV and go then.
I was there once when the tv filming in the 70s and the lighting was fine for ISO 400 and a standard lens can't remember what the exposure was now
