The Moon @ 980mm

Following on from my very similar thread HERE i managed to tweak my Canon 1.4x teleconverter so it fitted my 700mm telescope without any errors, by taping up the sensor, and went out tonight to take another shot of the moon.

700 X 1.4 = 980

I used my Canon 40D + 1.4x Teleconverter with the following settings :
Exp. : 1/25s
ISO : 100
Aperture : OPEN

The shot below is how big the shot was on the sensor, no cropping at all, in fact only a bit of an exposure tweak (+.50) was all i did.

I didnt have the patience or the time to take photos of any stars (the one i took came out a small white line until i upped the ISO to 1600) as at 980mm shake and light is SUCH a big problem.

I will get around to taking some photos of planets at 980mm sometime, but for now you will have to settle for a moon shot (im afraid).
Theres no need for a crop version this time !!!!

I know its a love or hate thing ...... i love it.

Re: The Moon @ 980mm

How do you manage to get a 980mm zoom?
Nice image, nice detail of the upper corner just as it meets the darkness.

My 40D was attached to my 700mm telescope (added to OP).
The problem with the moon being so full is you lose alot of detail, it is most photographic when it is half and you get some shading on it.

Curious as to how you attatch a telescope to a camera, I assume there is a lens adapter you can buy for most telescopes?

Great shot, just so much more detail in the moon when you can get the extra zoom. Look forward to the planet pictures

Re: The Moon @ 980mm

Amazing shot. By comparison, this is the best of a bad lot at 200mm from tonight, already cropped and zoomed to the max...almost identical perspective as yours but the difference in detail is massive.

I bought a 1.25" T-Mount which is basically a tube that has a Canon Mount Fitting on the end.
I fitted the 1.4 extender to the 40D (after taping up the sensors) then attached the T-Mount and that goes onto the telescope without the eyepiece.

Jobs a goodun.

I'm really impressed with the sharpness and detail. Have you tried this setup on wildlife shots?

Some more on Digiscoping with a DSLR

Hi Spooky,
I see that you use a Nikon D50.
Nikon do an adapter specifically for use with Nikon cameras and scopes.
It's known as the FSA-L1 They come up on ebay now and again.
I've got one which I use with a Nikon Fieldscope ED82.
I lost all my shots when my PC crashed last November but here are a couple that I'd previously sent to Flickr
These were taken with my D80.
You have to manually focus and I can't wait to try out my new D300 which allows you to use the liveview in tripod mode for close-up focusing.

If I had money to burn I would love to buy this new lens US $11,999 currently converts to £6,059.20 although I suspect it would be released at a higher price than than in the UK. The ideal lens for bird & moon photography!

Re: The Moon @ 980mm

Ta for all the comments, just pleased the atmos didnt spoil it as through LiveView at 10x magnification you can really start to see distortion through the atmospshere.

I just set it to auto. I did try other settings, but they were very similar.
I bet that 800mm lens is going to be a tad expensive.
My T-Mount cost £25, the telescope about £150 (2 years ago), and £170 for the Extender, so it is alot cheaper than a lens.

Re: The Moon @ 980mm

Just popped out tonight and had another go at shooting the moon.
Not too dissiminlar, but at a different angle.
Again at 980mm and only WB changed in Lightroom, no cropping done.

Who said all moon shots are the same

I promise next time i will try and do a planet, for some variety.

Re: The Moon @ 980mm

Just a quick question on the 980mm.

700mm telescope and a 1.4 converter = 980mm, but what about the 1.6 cropping on your 40D sensor.

How do you actually work this out?

Is it 700x1.6x1.4 = 1568.....
...or is it 700x(1.6+1.4) = 2100

I'm confused.....

Someone who knows about these things will know the answer....I hope

I am no camera expert...just a basic point and shoot guy, don't understand all the terminology etc (wish I did).

That picture to me is bloody amazing...the details on the craters... WOW... very impressive indeed.

Its the first - as they are both focal length multipliers.

Think of it like this - the TC makes the 700mm lens equivalent to a 980.
The crop factor of the camera then multiplies what it sees (980) by 1.6.

Re: The Moon @ 980mm

I did discuss this on another thread, and came to the conclusion that its not techniclaly 980 x 1.6, it just has a limited view (1.6) of what a full sensor shows.
So for arguments sake i dont count the extra 1.6x

980mm is enough for me.

Thanks for all the comments guys, appreciate them ...... so its not only me that loves pictures of the moon ?

Re: The Moon @ 980mm

Technically - yes you are correct kinchy

To be correct you could say that the angular field of view is the of a 980mm lens on a 1.6x crop camera is equivalent to the angular field of view of a 1568mm lens on a 35mm/"fullframe" camera.

I just got a 100-400 lens last weekend, and here's my (much poorer) attempt, on a 40D. Cropped a lot.
