Hi guys

I know there lots of reviews on lenses but i wanted to get your opinion on the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 lens.

Does any have this lens or used it??? Any view will be greatly welcomed.

It's good value and pretty decent, if not on the level of the Canon/Nikon alternatives (certainly up to around f5.6 and with regards to corner perfomance).

What body are you using it on?

The Sigma 24-60/2.8 is well regarded.

I have one...truthfully, I'm not that keen on it!

Why?

A little too soft for my liking at the f2.8 end (but there again, I'm spoiled with the odd prime lens)

IMHO too big/heavy for the EOS350D ...I could just about tolerate it on a full frame camera (to get the wider end @ 24mm), but what with the crop factor, it's just too cumbersome for what is effectively a 38mm-112mm on my camera.

Probably be selling it in fact!

To Completely confuse matters i have one and use it my D80.
I think it's great. Yes it's heavy but I find it plenty sharp at F2.8

It's going to be used on a 400D, not so sure now if it's too heavy as the wife uses the camera as well.

Does it have to be the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 lens.

Tamron also do a 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD which from what I have read has mixed reviews.

But they do a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 which I have and happy with, also from what I have read is has good reviews as well.

All I have got at the moment loaded onto Flickr is 3 HDRs picture which I don't think is the best way to judge a lens, am so far behind in my PPing. But I will try to dig something out, or if it don't rain tomorrow will be out with the swans and will get a couple with the lens.

Also there are others that have this lens and they may post some.

I have one which I use on my 30D and on the whole I like it.

I personally don't think it's heavy but then as my other lenses are a 70-200 f/2.8 L and a 17-40 f/4 L maybe that explains why I don't think it's heavy. In fact I think it's the perfect weight as it feels nice and solid in the hand.

Optically I don't really have any complaints, it's not quite as good as my 70-200 (lacks the colour saturation and sharpness of the 70-200) but then the 70-200 is a truly exceptional lens. I do think though that it is better than the 17-40.

The only thing I don't like about it is that the auto focus isn't as fast as my other lenses and the focusing motor is a bit noisy. I'm also not that big a fan of the Sigma focus locking ring which has caught me out a couple of times - hadn't realised I'd set the lens to manual focus - but that's a minor issue.

The only other thing that is a bit of a pain is the diameter of the lens. The 17-40, 70-200 and even the Canon 24-70 are all 77mm, the Sigma is 82mm. Apart from the fact that I therefore can't share any screw-in filters
with between this lens and my others it also means that any 82mm filter is bloody expensive!
