580EX MKII - Strobe setting?

Hi All

Just a quick one - does anyone know if the 580EX MKII has a strobe setting?

Cheers,

and if it is the same as the 430ex it is activated by pressing the DOF preview button.

Eh? The 430EX has this function? Now maybe (probably!) I'm wrong, but I've never seen this in the manual!!!!! So I press the cameras DoF button to activate the strobing...??

It's not the same as the strobe on the 580EX, it's a similar strobe to what the pop up flash does for AF assist in poor light.

Re: 580EX MKII - Strobe setting?

I interpreted the OPs question as being about the multiple flash function on the 580EXII rather than the use of the DOF preview button to activate the modelling light. I could well be wrong though. I guess it doesn't really matter though as the 580EXII can do both.

It's been a while since I had a very quick play with the "multi" function on the 580EXII, but you can set the frequency of the strobe so when you open the shutter the flash fires multiple times at that rate.

Cheers.

Edit: to active the strobe function on the 580EXII you hit the mode button which cycles through ETTL, Manual and Multi. Multi is the one you want. You can then set the number of Hz you want.

To activate the modelling light function on both the 430EX and 580EXII, you hit the DOF button on the camera - this stops the aperture of the lens down (in the same was as when you're not using flash) to whatever you've set it to and fires the flash continuously at a high rate for a second to give you a moment to look at what affect the strobe is having on the subject at that aperture.

Cheers.

I think we're all getting muddled up here but the 430ex doesn't flash intermitently when looking for focus (it does have an IR light that flashes though).

But yes the DOF button operates a modelling light which is achieved by very fast strobes. It doesn't have a strict strobe function though that's what you meant.

Re: 580EX MKII - Strobe setting?

Thanks all

I was primarily interested in whether the 580EX has a strobe mode - and from the answers it does. Good stuff!

The fact I can do a sort of strobe effect on my 430EX is an unexpected bonus.

Anyways, thanks for answering my question all
