I've never used it, but GIMP is meant to be an excellent freeware alternative to Photoshop.

Hi,

I second Picasa too, it's free and a lot of the shots taken in my album were processed using it until I got Lightroom. But for speed and easiness of use Picasa is excellent especially if only just starting out.

I had a look at Gimp a while back and gave up, preferred Picasa at the time.
