I've tried this in a 5:4 format with a 50:50 split as I think the sky nearly warrants it, does it work?

Just a shame about the blown highlights, used a .9 + .6 NGD as well.. I've some photos from minutes before and after but there is virtually no colour in the sky.

Well for starters, I think that the composition is brilliant! So I give the 5:4 format the .

It was obviously a tricky situation regarding exposure.... you've noted the blown highlights, but also the hills and trees to the left mid frame just look black. In fact some of the stone walls look black too, so I wonder if that's the way you've processed it?

I do think that you could still save this image by simply cropping off most of the blown out sky. Going back to a 3:2 format (landscape orientation) would definitely work, even if you left in a little of the blown sky. (IMO).

One thing's for sure - you've got some great scenery to work with!!

Sitting here with little else to do so had a little play and managed to bring up the shadows and tone down the sky a little... I hope you don't mind!

That's nice BB, seems to have brought out the red in the sky a little too.

This looks like an ideal candidate for exposure bracketing, dark for the sky and light for the foreground then merged in Photoshop using layer mask, using a soft black brush to paint out the light sky!
Sadly once you expose a blown sky even in RAW it’s not recoverable.
The format is fine for the shot, lovely scenery; Yorkshire dales are beautiful aren’t they!

What's wrong with a blown patch of sky? There's plenty of detail throughout the rest of the sky, I reckon it just gives it a bit more drama. So there :P

Don't mind at all, my PS skills need improvement and that is a good job, what did you do.

The wife really likes it with the blown sky and dark fells as it was darkish at the time, so who am I to argue.
