Manfrotto 190 I'm baffled

Like the title says I'm in the market for a new tripod Ive heard that this is the very chap good reviews etc.
So I thought I was sorted till it came to ordering one and I find that there are a number of models with the same number but different suffixes and a wide range of prices from £80 odd to £220 odd so I take it that there is quite a difference.

Does anyone know which is the one that gets the rave reviews I don't mind paying but don't want to pay £220 if the £80 is the one that gets the good reviews.

Thanks

Re: Manfrotto 190 I'm baffled

I've got the Manfrotto 055cl, bought 2nd hand for £50 from a very nice man on another forum.
I think they're about £100.

try http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/cat17.html
for info and prices.

Don't forget you'll need a head too (now thats when it gets confusing!)

Re: Manfrotto 190 I'm baffled

The 190 range is quite large - the different price points reflect the materials used, Carbon Fibre/Aluminuim etc, weight, maximum support, height.

One key feature on the higher spec models is the ability to mount the centre column horizontally.

I have one of the basic models (CL) which doesn't alloow this horizontal mounting - it wasn't something I needed or wanted and I saved a considerable amount of cash by going without it. I got mine for £90 with an 390RC2 head as part of a deal. There is apost about it here

The 190 is an excellent quality piece of kit, and suitable for all sorts of photography. Mine has been in rivers, sand, high winds and has always performed very well.

Unless you really need the high spec carbon fibre model, I would save some cash and invest in a tripod bag. Makes life much easier when carrying your tipod around/chucking it in the car, and is very useful to kneel on when on wet beaches, fields etc

Thanks Liquid very useful don't think I need a carbon 1 but mounting the arm horizontally could be useful and the 804RC2 head is looking promising

Re: Manfrotto 190 I'm baffled

The one I have is the 190XProB - that seems to get a lot of good reviews & is I think the most recent 190 option. I'd shop around a bit for prices but expect to pay £85-90 for the legs. The main advantage of this model is that you can set the centre-column to go horizontal which is quite useful. Have a look on the Manfrotto website & you'll see what I mean. However if you don't need it you may be able to save some money with a cheaper version.
Then there's the head... Firstly you need to decide whether you want a ball head or a 3 way. Ball heads are quicker to set but not so good for fine precision . You could do as I do and have both
Second decision is whether to get one with a QR plate. I did & would recommend doing so. I just leave the plate permanently on the camera.
Even so you'll find a somewhat bewildering array of models. I paid about £40 for a 486RC2 and just under £50 for an 804RC2. Very pleased with both.

Finally though, you might want to look around at some of the bundle deals at the moment. RGB Tech in Middlesbro' had some when I was in there a few days ago but I can't remember exactly what they comprised. I'm guessing this is near enough for you to visit - & I do think it's worth the time & trouble to have a look and play with a tripod before you buy.

Totally agree. About £20, quite sturdy / substantial & much better than a strap. I use my bag for exactly the same (kneeling mat) purpose

Re: Manfrotto 190 I'm baffled

Funnily enough, I'm in exactly the same boat really finding it tough to figure out which tripod / head combo and where to buy from...

The 190XPROB looks pretty decent allowing for macro stuff..

Search this forum a fair bit... just need to take the plunge and make a decision..

Re: Manfrotto 190 I'm baffled

I bought a 190XPROB and 488RC2 head with the Manfrotto 70cm bag all for about £170 (from Morrisphoto who delivered next day for free! !!!!)

I think it is absolutley perfect. It is strong, high, able to go horizontal, well built, light( light enough anyway), looks cool, can go very low and does everything i want it too.

If you want pics i will happily supply some, but the best advice i can give you is BUY IT. It is a top product and well worth the money.
