Note: If you need a hotel for 29th and/or 1st, we recommend the Guildford Travelodge which isn't too far from the station. Please book it yourself - ta!

----------------------

Gordon and I are hatching a plan. It goes something like this:
  • Meet at Pizza Express in Guildford (top of the High St) on the evening of Friday Feb 29th for general introduction, chat, drinks, confirm plan for the following day.
  • Stay overnight in a suitable hotel nearby (Travel Lodge/Inn)
  • Meet up early Saturday morning and split into 4 groups of 4ish people.
  • Each group heads off to separate locations.
  • We have 4 very nice locations on the itinerary so far:
    1. River Wey where I take lots of pics - particularly nice early in the morning.
    2. St Martha's Hill - lovely little old church & graveyard on the top of a hill - nice views, in the middle of the countryside, lovely walk up to it.
    3. Guildford town centre - will be a busy Saturday so lots of photo opps down the cobbled high street, lanes, castle, river, Porshe dealership etc.
    4. Derelict farm - good for some very tame "exploration". We have another location if you feel like something a tad more ambitious.
  • To avoid swamping the locals, the groups have a sequence of the 4 locations to go to i.e. group 1 does the river first whilst group 2 is up the hill and group 3 is on the farm.
  • Lunch - I think it would be a nice idea to meet up for lunch - I know a nice pub or two. Will sort this on the Friday night
  • Finish off the day in a room in the Guildford Tup pub in Guildford where we'll have a PC, projector (calibrated!) and screen for some light-hearted critique of the day's shots. We recommend JPEGs only as nobody wants to fiddle with RAWs. We'll have Lightroom running to import and organise the pics.
  • Presumably people will then stay in the hotel on Saturday night too as they'll be too merry to drive.

What will you need? Camera, charger, cards, tripod probably, clean pants, money, phone.

Cheers!

Tobers

PS - never one to pass up an opportunity for self promotion, here's a pic of each of the locations:

River Wey

St Martha's hill

I'm up for this. My clean pants are at the ready!

...may also want to consider a non-residential variant though. I'm only 30mins away.

Re: Guildford meet & drink

Return train from Lincoln would cost me £35. How cheap is the hotel bearing in mind I'm a poor student?

I'm interested though.

Just to give you an idea, the travel lodge, which is in Guildford (just down from where we meet of a Monday Evening) is £29 for 1 room for 1 night.

No experience required . The idea is that we all learn from each other

Re: Guildford meet & drink

I really hope some very good photographers come so i can learn from them.
That would be the beauty of this meet for me. I can ask the more experienced people advice and maybe give some out of my own. The best way to learn is to get and do it and with the aid of others i think this will be beneficial for all.

This obviously depends how Lorna is with her chemo but it seems to fit. If I do have to cancel at short notice I will stand the cost

Re: Guildford meet & drink

I would be up for the outing ... but with funds being what they are at present ... I'd maybe look at getting an early train out and a late train back ...

A quick look on national rail says that trains out of London start at 05:00 and last few direct ones back are 22:55 - 23:08 - 23:39 ... so possibly a long day but doubtless a rewarding one

I wouldn't want to take a "bum on a car seat" of anyone wanting to make a weekend of it - so maybe put my name as first on the reserve list ... and if there is space count me in?

OK - I'll put some sense into this thread in a bit and put a list of people up on my first original post which I'll keep editing as we add more people.

No problem just coming down on the day of course, but make sure you dont miss the evening "critique" .

Re: Guildford meet & drink

I've updated post #1 on this thread with the current list of who is going.

I suggest to make it really easy that if you want overnight accommodation on the Friday and Saturday that you book it yourself. This will save us from administrative overhead of enormous propostions.

The hotel of choice is the Guildford Travelodge. This is reasonably priced, and there is a Frankie & Bennie's pizza/burger place underneath it which chould do for dinner. Across the A3 (by footbridge) is the Wooden Bridge pub which, whilst not overly glamorous, does serve beer. We can also make our way into Guildford which should be pretty busy on both nights.

This leaves me & Gordon & Mystery Guide to arrange the Saturday evening review/critique location which we'll get onto ASAP.

Cheers!

Tobers
