Keyboard

So I bought Lorna a keyboard for her birthday/Christmas present and having it in the house just give yet another photo opportunity.

I might actually have a go at learning to play it myself but I can't see me getting very far as I can't read music, that's a very defeatist attitude already I know but.........well, there you go!

Anyway, comments welcome

Re: Keyboard

Nice shot Steve.

I'd have been tempted to either reframe the shot so the Yamaha logo and key markers aren't in shot or clone them out. Also, there's a slightly distracting speck of white dust on the 3rd key in.

Sheesh, i'm critical aren't I.

It'd be no fun at all if we all agreed on everything.

Are you sure that isn't a dust speck?

Re: Keyboard

nice shot .. gonna be interesting to see how you develop your shots in the days / weeks to come with the keybaord theme ...

mate i would seriously encourage you to take it up - playing an instrument is fantastic. I played the piano for about 6 years when I was younger. It's my one single most regret in life not keeping it on ... then again now I like to bang things and call myself a drummer !

Re: Keyboard

My eye keeps getting drawn to the white speck of dust on the 3rd key in, if you stare at it for too long it begins to take on gargantuan proportions and takes over the whole photograph.

Very disappointing Mr Green, i expected better of you

Re: Keyboard

Like how the grey of the keyboard goes well with the black and white of the piano keys.

Been playing the piano for about 20 years, can honestly say in that time it's the only thing I've kept a constant interest in. I'd certainly encourage anyone to take up learning an instrument.

Re: Keyboard

That's a nice clean shot for ISO 1600 Steve, you must have got the exposure spot on for that.

I think I'm with you on the Yamaha logo, to clone it out would leave it a bit too plain IMO.

Re: Keyboard

Liking the framing, DOF and processing on this one Steve - very nice

Personally I think a couple of specks could be cloned (mentioned previously I think), as well as a bit of cloning in the top left of the frame to remove the dark corner

long winded and probably not worth the hassle but can you run a midi to the computer then computer audio to amplifier - like i say a bit of a hassle jsut to play loud - but when you want to play beethoven to the world it might work

Re: Keyboard

Bought this about 18 month's ago, comfrotably the best keyboard I've ever owned in over 20 years playing. It's a yamaha P-250 been replaced by another model but hard to beat the piano sound it produces I feel certainly in the digital domain :

Re: Keyboard

bought the wife a yamaha digital piano last year. proper 'piano' sound which took ages as she's a fussy bugger, everything sounded too electronic.

She's also scarily good. she can just listen to something on the radio and just play it. I have no idea how she does it, but it does tempt me to try.

As to the actual picture , any reason it was at ISO 1600? Were you trying for a grainy look, or needed to do it handheld?

I needed the combination of ISO-1600 and f/4 to get the shutter speed up to 1/5 second.......good job I had IS. I had messed about with f/1.4 on my Sigma 30mm and oviously got better shutter speeds but I wasn't happy with the overall composition at that depth of field. I was just messing around to be honest so getting the tripod out wasn't even considered. I think tripods are fine for landscapes etc but I just can't be bothered with them for 'run of the mill' shots.

I can understand 'can't be bothered'

what focal length were you at? even with IS, 1/5th seems slow (I have wobbly hands though)
