Edinburgh Xmas Night and Day

I've had a couple of trips to Princes St to capture the usual shots, one at night and one during the day. Both good learning experiences as I've definitely picked up on things I would do differently on the next visit.

Night

Next time... I will wait for the wheeel to get up to speed and use a longer shutter... but I quite like these two.

1.

2.

Daytime

Some snaps during lunch-break today.
These are straight out of camera - no PP.

3.

4.

Thanks TH.

It's a singh-ray gold 'n' blue polariser.

So far one of the best accessories I've ever bought for the dSLR.

It has quite a bit of variation... see this thread where I posted some samples at varying degrees of polarisation.

Takes some getting used to!

Cheers

Re: Edinburgh Xmas Night and Day

After seeing them photos, i am looking forward to going there this Friday.

Nice man boss is treating all the staff to a christmas bash, flying there Friday Evening and coming back on Sunday.

There will be 12 of us staying at the Balmoral Hotel on Princes Street and the bash is in the hotel on Saturday Night.

Tempted to make it into a photo opportunity, but i will have to play it cool, there are 12 of us knocking around together during the day (maybe just the camera in a small bag with a teeny weeny lens will pass unoticed)

My first time North of the border, should be fun

Thanks guys!

bodoman - hope you have a great time! You're staying in a superb location and not to shabby by any means! I'm sure you'll get to grab a spare 10-15 mins and go for some shots!

I'll not be staying there anytime soon after paying for that filter!

Yeah right it's got the best address in Edinburgh!

That's the Balmoral (with the clock) in #1, #2, and #5 by the way... otherwise known as Bodoman's Doss House!

Cheers Bubble!
That's one of the things I like about the gold 'n' blue polariser.
You can vary the effect from vivid purples at one end of the scale to an almost sepia tone at the other. I was hoping it would lead to less PP, or at least less of an urge to PP shots, and it's working so far for me.

they certainly look great and do look like you've spent a bit of time pp the pics. if the filter wasn't so expensive i'd be very tempted!

Re: Edinburgh Xmas Night and Day

Lovely stuff 159.
I really fancied that filter when I saw your first batch from it. Unfortunately after 10 minutes on the Singh-Ray site, I could have spent a small fortune there..... I was just beginning to forget and now you post this

#6 I think is my favourite...but it's a tough call.

Great set - Love the colour effect the filter is giving you. Some great compositions - with #7 being my pick.

Nice work

Re: Edinburgh Xmas Night and Day

Until you mentioned the filter Dave, I genuinely thought you'd got up maybe really early in the morning to capture that sort of light. It's worth that sort of money on a filter for a few extra hours in bed

I'm seriously tempted with that filter.

Love the photo's by the way

These are good, like #2 a lot

Looks like that filter is bringing a new dimension to your photography as well

I've been meaning to go out after dark and get a few shots around Edinburgh's christmas centre since the big wheel was assembled, just not got round to it yet

...which is completely shocking considering I now work about 100yards from the big wheel
