Cigarette paper to clean

Right, I was watching a video podcast with some photography tips and this guy was talking about stuff he brings in his kit bag for his travels. He mentioned that he used cigarette paper (the ones for rollies like Rizla) as a cheap throwaway solution to wipe on the front element of your lens to clean grease and dirt - very much like those papers you see some girls use to wipe away oils on thier faces. Anyone used this trick before? Sounds wierd but the guy seems to know his stuff.

Re: Cigarette paper to clean

i'd have thought they were a bit too harsh to use on a lens and would be more use as a diffuser on a flash

Re: Cigarette paper to clean

Not being a smoker, I'm not sure what the texture of the paper is like. And considering how cheap they are, I'm a bit sceptical too. But he did wipe his L-lens with one of them on the video

Re: Cigarette paper to clean

I would not think it a good idea as a rizla has a strip of gum on it

Re: Cigarette paper to clean

I've got a lens cleaning kit that includes some thin paper wipes, a bit like fag papers.
You basically drop some cleaning fluid on the lens element and use the wipes to push it around until it evaporates and any dirt ends up on the paper.

I guess using just a fag paper is a trick for when you're out and there's nothing else to use. I can't see it doing any harm as long as it's kept the right way up.

Re: Cigarette paper to clean

Maybe there are brands that don't have the gum bits? His one seemed to be some no-branded ones.

Here's a link to the video (mp4 format)
