The middle one - the image lends itself to mono well. I like the lighting on the lower stairs in the third image, but the highlights attract my eye too much.

For me its no1. My eye gets drawn up to the window and then I notice the colour. (but then I'm not a big fan of B&W). No3's blown highlights are just too distracting IMO.

Re: Which do you prefer and why? (photo)

im going to go with the mono in number 2, Although i dont necessarily think we need to see anything out of the window so i do like that element of number 3... However i would agree that the amount of blown highlights is possibly a bit distracting

Great pics though mate well done

Re: Which do you prefer and why? (photo)

I prefer number 1 since it seems to bring out the texture on the wall under the window, but that's not to say I dislike number 2.
Number 3 just doesn't work for me because of the blown highlights.

Re: Which do you prefer and why? (photo)

If i'm honest, none of them work for me. Just a little to soft, and i'm not sure the composition works. The blown highligths are just a little too distracting as well.

However, the second version works the best of the three IMO.

Re: Which do you prefer and why? (photo)

I like the first one best, as it looks nearest to the pic's I used to take with my old Olympus. Monochrome has it's good points, but here it's just too easy to see the 'tweaks'. The best part is the different coloured walls and the way the colours seem to accentuate the detail around the bars. Looks really 3D, just like the picture on my Sony TV! Second place goes to picture 3 for the great 'whitewash' effect of the light, and the extra detail around that.

1 or 2 for me. To be honest I didnt realise 1 was still in color until I re-read some of the replies on this thread. Perhaps my eyes are going !

1. Prefer the tonal range, did u just do a mono conversion or did you convert to B&W using channel mixer?

I think maybe no. 3 for me. Because I like the strong geometric shapes that are being produced by the higher exposure. I think it works well from an abstract point of view.

#1 for me. Simply because it's the one I like the most having looked through them one by one. The textures and colours of the walls are the winning points I think.

I'm afraid I with Liquid on this. They all look soft and not helped by the tight shadows cast. Compositionally my eyes are all over looking for a resting point.
They go from bottom right, up the hand rail to the cross piece on the wall, past the lamp and then up and out of the window!
But hey what do I know!

No 1 for me.
2 and 3 are good, but the very subtle colours in No 1 serve it well.

Re: Which do you prefer and why? (photo)

Thanks guys. I was asking for a specific reason of course. The image is called Shadows and Light. The last shot is the original that I like but that I knew was too blown out. I like the geometric shapes and the tones of it and wanted to put it in for our club digital image comp. I know it looks soft, due to the fact it's the abandoned cement factory Tobers and I shot last month..and everything is covered in inches of fine grey dust.

Tobers suggested I go back and try to see if I could recover the highlight detail or clone in some from elsewhere. In the end I actually used a different exposure and did some tricks with it.

The mono thing was a last minute idea and was just a straight desaturation, not channel mixed.

I think I prefer No1 myself. Thanks everyone

Re: Which do you prefer and why? (photo)

Has to be No 3 for me. I know I'm bucking the trend here and I do agree about the whitewash in the central area, but it's the details it brings out in the rest of the image which is lacking in the other versions.

Especially the top left triangle, the wall detail for example is just so much better rather than just a dark greyish area of nothing.
