Canon 350D V Nikon d40 IMHO D40 Wins. My 1st D40 pic

I recently did a very stupid thing and sold my Canon 350d, couldn't really afford decent lenses.

I purchased a panasonic fz18, big mistake, nice rang 18-540mm but blurred and noisy images.

I have now reserved a Nikon d40, is there a big difference in the picture output compared to the Canon. I know it has 2 million pixels less but i have read it doesn't make a significant difference.

Anyone recommend any good non Nikon lenses ? I know they need to have built in motors.

Thanks

I am not sure if the D40 is a good choice if you are on a limited budget. You can use lens without the motor and manually focus them but this does not appeal to everyone. I own four lens that work on the D40 but the only real cheapy is the one that came in my D40 kit, the others are a Nikon 70-300vr - £300, Nikon 70-200vr - £1000 and a Sigma 30mm HSM - £230. I know that many would say that to increase your choice of lens it might be worth trying to track down a D50.

Uh the D40 produces some nice images, at 6mp , close to comparable with the 350d

BUT apart from that its a sorry story. No body motor restricts your lens choices, no DoF preview, no mirror lockup, no ISO 100(?), no bracketing , slow shooting, slower AF etc etc.

You compromised and regreted it going to the fz18, dont make a mistake again.

The base 200 ISO isn't an issue - don't forget the D300 has raised the base to 200 as well! The D40 has a better image quality and lower noise than the 350D across the whole ISO range.

The lens range is another story of course. I'd suggest a D40+kit lens+70-300VR. There's also a cheaper 55-200VR. If these lenses are out of your price range, I'd recommend that you don't get the D40.

Incidentally Sigma have now upgraded the 17-70 and 18-50 2.8 to HSM, so you've got some decent 3rd party lenses now too.

If it's still on the shelves, get yourself a copy of "Which Digital Camera" for this month. I bought it recently, because it had a review on DSLRs. It compared all those for under £350 and then under £500 and so on. It gives a very good review of the D40 and the 350D, but as far as i can remember the 350D came out on top, just.

Hope that helps.

...unless you want slow shutter speeds.

Even with ISO 100 I crave for ISO 50!

I thought threads like this expired .. last year ie 2006

Now there are the 400D and D40x,, you might want to give them a go

Nice suggestion, you going to give me the extra £100.00

A lot of people saying the 40 takes better pics than the 40x!

Like the 350 vs 400D a lot of people chose not to justify the extra ( I do have the 350D BTW ... excellent camera) I have used the 400D too though not the D40
I agree that the 40Dx and 400D are really not upgrades but if buying fron scratch I would get the newer model TBH

Difference between a 15 second shot and a 30 second shot. Like T0MAT01 I'd like ISO 50 too.

Re: Canon 350D V Nikon d40

Think you should have stuck with the 350D

And the Pentax would be similar to the 400D and you could struggle for a good choice of lenses. The Nikon D40x would be a reasonable choice and at 4mp more too for only an extra £10.

I seem to think the opinion is get the D40 over the D40x if you do not need to crop much on the photo's you take. The extra res of the D40x will let you crop more but I am pretty sure the D40 controls noise a little better giving you slightly cleaner pics.

Re: Canon 350D V Nikon d40

Picked up my D40 on Sat an love it. Previously i owned a 350d which was nice, downgraded to the new Panansonic fZ18 huge mistake.

Up to now i much say i prefer the feel of the d40 to the 350d.

Took some images in default raw mode today.
