Was done with a G9 in macro mode, I don't have a hug control over DOF, with a SLR would the effect your describing be down to the lense you picked? Gives me something to think about anyways, I can see what your saying

Yeah, I pushed the levels on PP here as it was, not the best photo in the world now I think about it.

I must have taken 50 shots of this at different angles, lighting etc but this was one of the first ones and nothing I did after looked better

Yes, I see the little artifact now you mentioned it, I also cropped the picture to 3x2 loosing area from the bottom of the picture, gave it strong contrast curves, clarity etc an also ran it through NR software as it was slightly noisy.
Anyways, thanks for all the comments, some good things for me to think about
