SaveMyPostOffice.co.uk

Had a Flickr message from the webmaster of the savemypostoffice.co.uk website asking to use my Post Box picture as a holding image for the front page of the new website.

As it was a non-commercial website I agreed for a credit and a link which he has done.

Looks quite nice I think

Re: SaveMyPostOffice.co.uk

Nice work Steve - It does look nice.

Unfortunately, I can't see anything which will save small local post offices. They just don't turn a profit because people don't use/need them. We have one in our village, and it's actually quite useful. Sadly, the person working behind the counter always seems to huff and puff about just about anything you need. My GF works from home, and sometimes needs to buy 100's of stamps, and send hundreds of letters. You should see the fuss this lady makes! You'd think she'd be pleased to have this business.

Anyway - it's interesting that people are turning to flickr to find images, and pleasing to see them properly request and credit the photographer

I thought that was a basic requirement for working in a small village post office

Re: SaveMyPostOffice.co.uk

Its true about some post offices being unable to justify their existence on the "Making a profit " leagues table
The fact of their being a Hub of social and community life doesn't seem to matter any more
A bit of a pity but I guess this is 2007
However, Im of the opinion that Royal mail ( or Insignia.. whatever) ) want to close as many as possible regardless.. . Some which are currently profit making ones will go too if the predicted viability in say 5 years is said to be unsustainable
WH Smith is looking set to be your Local post office!

Is this really the case though?

Doesn't everybody just have their pensions, giros and the like paid directly into their account? When I buy stamps, I tend to buy them at the supermarket, Car tax is paid online, TV licence is Direct Debit - The only time I go to the post office these days is to send a parcel - Which, judging by the rest of the people waiting with me is what they're doing as well. In fact I think it's probably ebay that is keeping most of these places alive. The changes in technology combined with the unions wishing to strangle the places dry* will speed the process up considerably.

I hear you, and we are in 2007 , times have changed and our way of life has too

However , I still do my Car Tax at the Post office,

TV licence is DD ( ironically it costs more that way)

Like all I post small packages there too given that we now have small and large "first class" packages and just putting a stamp is no longer sufficient
Also the issue of posting even a letter by recorded delivery or registered post means you have to go there from time to time
Not everyone has a Debit credit card or is comfortable to use them online and I dont know how any on income support who will be rejected for a bank account of any sort get thier income or entitlements

I do feel for those whose means of livelihood it is though as there is a place for modernising the Post Office without outmoding it completely

BTW .. many of the postal workers Ive met welcome you with a smile, dont huff and puff and seem pleased to have your business
