Olympus E500 / Canon MP850 picture viewing

Hi all,

My Dad has an Olympus E500 8megapixel camera with Canon MP850 pictbridge printer for printing directly off the memory card.

He now wants to purchase a screen/monitor for wall mounting to view his pictures on.

The questions are;

1/ if he is taking pictures at a resolution of 1028, if he purchases a monitor with resolution of 2500 or above, will we notice the difference i.e. will it upgrade the picture quality ?

2/ what screen/monitor would you recommend he purchase ? could he connect it to the printer and/or camera he has and just view from memory card ? could he use a pc monitor or HD LCD ?

Any help appreciated

Re: Olympus E500 / Canon MP850 picture viewing

Some HD LCD's have a built in card reader to view photo's on [as long as they are JPEG] but it's a large expense for what is basically a photoframe. Have a look at some of the LCD photoframes on offer, they allow a variety of cards and some are great quality. I believe they are over 10" these days too so a nice size.

As for resolution, it should display this in it's native resolution, you don't want to upscale the picture too much or it would introduce noise and artifacts.

Re: Olympus E500 / Canon MP850 picture viewing

Hi, he actually wants above 20" to wall mount, that's why I had excluded photo viewers.

I will check out the LCD's with built in card viewers, thanks

Can't see the above, but have found this; http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-SDV2...287733-2235059
photo viewer - can I connect this to a standard LCD tv ? and are they any good ?

Since you mentioned he is using an 8 mega pixel camera there should be no worries about image quality since even a 1080x1920 HDTV only has about 2 mega pixels so no upscaling is needed.

As mentioned, a flat panel HDTV with a card reader (of the type he uses) is probably easiest if he doesn't have a PC to hook it up to.

Another thing worth knowing is that most DVD players will display jpeg photos which have been saved onto a CD or DVD and play a slideshow from them on your TV.

Can't find an LCD with card reader, unless you mean separate card reader like the Amazon one ?

He is storing them onto USB memory stick at the moment, so no CD's - the one's I copied onto CD for him he thinks have lost some of the quality (cheap discs maybe ?).

Nah, one of the guys here has just bought one but think that was a 40" . I did find a 22" with a card reader but it listed a PC as required

Another option is to use a little UMPC to drive a conventional monitor so he could have WiFi access to it to then. Depends on budget and requirements.

You can also get an upscaling one with a USB card slot for around £50, also plays DIVX's etc too

Did you need the USB for AVI's or just Pictures?

The 5965 is apparently an older model but I can't find any on eBay even

I did find an alternative on www.bigpockets.co.uk though but it doesn't appear to do AVI via USB. Has loads of card slots though which might be more use to him

Bah bigpockets is dying for me right now, the model [IIRC] was a Umax 7600.

Another option is this one http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/proddet.jsp?id=1605&cat=5

Re: Olympus E500 / Canon MP850 picture viewing

it's purely for viewing his photos, he's not very computer knowledgeable

Rewinding a little, could he connect his Canon printer into an LCD tv or large monitor and use the memory slot on that and view his pictures, save having a DVD player with memory slot ? I have seen some monitors with USB connections that he could possibly connect his camera directly to also, would this work ? He seems to think he will have better PQ viewing on a monitor than LCD tv as they can offer better resolutions (although it was mentioned that the screen won't upscale the photos...)

Just want to offer him all options to see which way he wants to go.

Re: Olympus E500 / Canon MP850 picture viewing

If he purely wants to view then on a larger screen than the camera for short times [as opposed to having the slideshow on full time] then he can simply connect the AV out on the camera to any cabaple screen. Hell you can even do it via scart on a normal CRT TV.

Should have a wire with a little yellow plug on it which can then be plugged into a scart adaptor or straight into a component AV socket on the TV / monitor.

I assumed he wanted it for showing his pictures full time, does he just want to review them on a large screen prior to printing. Or just showing the odd shots to his mates etc without having to print them.

He wants to run slide shows as and when - but wanted the best possible screen resolution etc. for doing this hense question on upscaling the 1028 photo resolution to 2560 monitor etc.

Thank you - so he can connect his camera to anything then it's just what would be the best hardware for doing this - that dvd player upscales but I guess that's not on the card reader only dvd's.
