do adobe have us over a barrel

I'm keenly looking forward to the D300 being released but being a photoshop CS2 person I think im going to be in the same situation i was when i got my D200.

When I upgraded to the D200 I was only running CS1, adobe didn't do a raw converter for CS1 only CS2. So I had to upgrade my version of photoshop. Now I'm thinking this is going to be the same situation should i decide to get the D300. Having a look at the raw converters on there is seems the ones for newer cameras like canon D40 are only available for CS3.

For me this is a major upgrade because I run win 2k (dont laugh I have the attitude , if its not broke why fix it) so as CS3 doesn't work on win 2k I have to upgrade to xp or vista, which may need a hardware upgrade for my pc or a new one entirely, a new windows license and then a CS3 upgrade.

Am I the only here who is annoyed at the lack of backward compatability for people who have been loyal to a company only for them to turn their back on us.
While I dont condone it I'm not surprised that people get dodgy copies of certain pieces of software.

ok ive had my moan but if anyone could recomend a piece of software that'll allow these new raw file to be converted and not break the bank with tons of upgrades I'd appreciate it

thanks

Re: do adobe have us over a barrel

Not an overly surprising situation as both Microsoft and Adobe make their money in this way. Yes it does hit you but you can vote with your feet and use another (cheaper) alternative.

I think Adobe's pricing in the UK compared to the USA is rather ridiculous though.

Mac Mini, Aperture, external HDD and you will be laughing. A machine specific to photography leaving your normal machine to be used as a 'daily driver'

Re: do adobe have us over a barrel

You have several options really ....

Nikon ViewNX - brand new and totally free download from Nikon website. It'll allow you to view and alter your NEF files and export TIFFs to CS2 for editing.

Nikon CaptureNX - slighlty more advanced - around £90

Lightroom - Adobe's offering in the 'digital darkroom' range of software. Gets rave reviews and has just been updated for RAW files from the 40D and other new DSLRs. Around £200 ish.

Alternatively treat yourself to a Mac and get Aperture.

Re: do adobe have us over a barrel

There's another option. Adobe's DNG converter will get you a RAW file you can edit in CS2 for no additional outlay.
You can't get cheaper than FREE!!!

Re: do adobe have us over a barrel

I don't know if this will work but I had a D40X for a month and found that my version of Capture NX would not read the D40X NEFs but read my D80 NEFs fine. I edited the exif using 'exiftool' and changed the camera name from D40X to D80 and I could read the NEF file no problem. Might work as a work around with CS2 until adobe catch up.

True..
However, also note that Adobe have just released Adobe camera Raw that works for Canons 40D..( which as you say is CS3) but the DNG option is very viable. it works with Windows 2000 .. and CS2

Unless it is Nikon who are in the habit of making it hard for third party software companies like Adobe, It shouldn't be that the D300 would need a complete software upgrade

Re: do adobe have us over a barrel

I think that applies to virtually every company which trades from the Northern America (and some that dont)

Adobe is one, Sony, Microsoft, Apple, Avid are others.. to name a few.
Virtually all of them seem assured that the Uk market is ripe for the picking. Our Govt simply turns a blind eye as long as their tax revenues continue to climb

Correct, but when you're talking about downloadable software, almost certainly from a central global server, it really stinks. You simply can't download from Adobe US. Many (usually smaller) software vendors are quite happy to sell you an online product in dollars, invoice to the UK and slap VAT on it.

Re: do adobe have us over a barrel

It does stink.. but when we dont vote with our wallets ( as we should) we continue to encourage the greed
While Im not condoning piracy, In certain far East Countries where you can pick up software for £5.. Adobe dare not sell boxed software for anything like they do here

On a lighter note.. Win2K doesnt do much for me....!

Re: do adobe have us over a barrel

Why should Adobe put new support for new software into an older not supported version?

Its not like the camera makers dont give raw processing software with their cameras eh.

Sucky to have old versions of software on old OS's but you cant expect adobe not to move on and to still support an 8 year old OS , twice defunct.

I was on win2k myself and moved to Vista, a lot better.

Re: do adobe have us over a barrel

On the same topic , talking recently to my US based colleagues, there seems to be a certain perception by some larger N American companies that we over here deserve to be "fleeced"

ostensibly because

Our societies seem to "encourage" piracy ( or maybe not discourage it enough)
We are not innovative ourselves and use the EU to bounce competition

Both perceptions are downright silly but do seem very real in corporate America and nothing one says to the contrary seems to dispel them until any then come to live here for a short spell
