Question Good photography locations around South of England?

Greetings.

I currently live in Worthing, West Sussex and wanted to go out and spend a full day with my family but at the same time take advantage of the nice weather (which might soon end!) and take some goodd shots of various locations. The problem is, I am not very good geographically and cannot think where I should start. I was looking around the area of West Sussex or around Southampton?Portsmouth area as well. I am interested in anything out of the norm, like the pictures attached below.

If you can give me any advice on areas/locations I should check and what I can find there!

Hi Vinz! I'm in worthing too, in Findon Village. Come and check the village out, its nice :D

I'm not really a photographer so I don't know many good places, but just thought I'd say hi to someone who probably lives quite near me!

Littlehampton

The downlands museum is also good and not far from you. Our kids loved it there.

"Different" shots are what you make them....

I would recommend getting into Brighton for some good street opportunities, along with Architecture.

Also the South Downs are a mine of Landscape (and possibly action/wildlife) ops.

Then there are masses of little villages (not really up on the ones in West Sussex - know more of them in East) that could prove interesting.

Also in East Sussex and coming up and a couple of months is the legendary Lewes Bonfire Night - great op for night/street/randomness photos.

Good suggestions there, I keep meaning to take the Chichester harbour tour but never get around to it!

A few nice places on the harbour are Bosham, Emsworth, Itchenor, also Hayling Island is good if you want to get some wind surfers and kite boarders.

If you like walks then there's the South Downs way and also Halnaker Windmill but be warned - that one is quite a climb!

Also, if you're into landscapes then Whiteways at the top of Bury hill is a nice place to go, although for the best shots you need to walk along a busy road for a bit.

HTH.

Seven Sisters / Beachy Head towards Eastbourne

Amen to Brighton - Both Piers offer different opportunities

Going West - Portsmouth or a bit further the Jurassic coast beyond Bournmouth

What about the paragliders who go off the south downs to the west of Fulking. Just drive along westwards and you'll see them. Lovely colourful pics. Polarising filter is a must to get those blue skies and colour saturation.

I misread that on my first scan

To be honest, the pictures you have linked to, especially the first and third could be taken virtually anywhere, it's just a case of seeing the shot.

Re: Good photography locations around South of England?

Absolutely great stuff!

Thank you for all your replies so far. I will probably start around the Chichester harbour. I've been to Chichester's town a few times but never really had a look at the harbour location. I'm also interested in Old-England style streets i.e. tight alleyways with stone patches, old bricks etc.

You can't get much older than the weald and download open air museum that jeffry linked to above. It sounds like just what you're looking for, fantastic place!

Re: Good photography locations around South of England?

I'm in Worthing as well! For a nice day out with the family and some great photo oppurtunities, I found the Southwater Country Park a great place if it's nice weather. Some great scenery and nature (not my photos):

It's really not too much of a drive, just out of Worthing on the A24. On the way back, stop off in Findon village to eat at the Tajdar, best flippin curry I've had in my whole life :D

Re: Good photography locations around South of England?

Im in Surrey/Hampshire and am planning on getting up very early on Wednesday morning to take a few snaps somewhere with a mate who is into his SLR photography.
I have been reading htis thread, so can anyone recomend a placed where a good sunrise woudl occur.
Cant think of any hills in the South or somewhere of natural beauty for some good shots (New Forest, toward Southampton/Portsmouth is easy for me).

Any ideas ??

Re: Good photography locations around South of England?

A good sunrise will generally occur in the east.

Depends what you are after, but if it is a landscape shot, I'd head up the Hog's Back and get yourself on the south side. You'll have rather super views southwards to the South Downs across lots of lovely farmland and woods. At dawn if you are lucky you'll get some nice low mist as well.

There's a cafe on the south side (westbound carriageway) with parking, and you can then wander along until you find a suitable spot. Here's a google map of the layby.

I really recommend you recce the area beforehand. You'll be in a rush at dawn when you realise how quickly the light changes, and you dont want to be caught halfway to a good location and miss your shot.

Re: Good photography locations around South of England?

I was born and bred in Chichester so know the south pretty well - Sheffield Park and the Bluebell Railway are not far away from you: plenty of golden trees in the next month there. Gatwick Airport for something less tranquil? The south is well blessed with trees - Ashdown Forest, New Forest, pick a place along the South Downs way. Cliffs at Dover?

Chichester Harbour is very pleasant - some nice pubs on the Itchenor side. Chichester town centre has some lovely architecture, actually - if you cast your eyes above the shop signs, there's some great facades there.

Spooky, JUST been talking to the Mrs and she recomended the same thing.

I was there a couple of months ago, i stopped on my way home from work .... i go along Hogs Back all the time living in Farnham.

I migh be there Wednesday i reckon as its only 2 miles away.

If not @marky_h, good idea Gatwick, and i had already thought of the New Forest, i got married there, and all id need was one of the "lakes" or into the forest itself would look cool.

Ta for that.
