Edinburgh Festival Fireworks - Photo's

Left a bit later than I was planning so didn't bother trying to get up Calton Hill. Headed up Salisbury crags instead and met a couple of people I knew from flickr which was nice.

Shot with my 70-300 usually at the wider end. Most of these have been cropped which is something I always try to avoid doing but the fireworks were all over the place...

I metered for the castle set everything to manual and then fired away. I had a fair bit of trouble with the fireworks overexposing. A 3 stop graduated filter would have been perfect but I improvised by waving my black sleeve in front of the lens which actually worked quite well. I'll try not to bore you with too many so have selected 6. (they are in chronological order if anyone's interested!)

#1

#2

#3

#4

#5

#6

They are all shot at F5.6 and 4s, ISO 100 which after a small period of experimentation I found gave a reasonable result.

Hope you got on allright onefivenine and anyone else.

Agree with Steve, they're all good but it's number 4 for me too.

Number 6 looks nice but there's a bit too much smoke sadly.

Re: Edinburgh Festival Fireworks - Photo's

Good idea to meter off the castle - done know if I'd have thought of that .

#1 with the closer view of the castle is great. Shutter a bit too fast though I think, but a nice effect.

#4 is the pick of the bunch - nice one!

Re: Edinburgh Festival Fireworks - Photo's

Nice set ally. I like the buildings, and think next year I'll try a location closer, but I was quite happy with the shots I got from Ferry Road. See the original thread.

Re metering - i didn't think that would . I just set it to f/8 and bulb and held the shutter open for as long as a burst was, 3-5 secs - seemed to work fine - niec dark sky and clear colourful fireworks. You got good results there. Well done! Must have been chily up there though!

Re: Edinburgh Festival Fireworks - Photo's

Nice results and looks like a great viewpoint!

#4 is cracking mate

I'm surprised you were shooting at around f/5.6 though, but it's given you a pretty sharp castle in #5

Re: Edinburgh Festival Fireworks - Photo's

#4 for me too, as the fireworks fill the frame a lot more than the others

Re: Edinburgh Festival Fireworks - Photo's

Great shots ally - nice to see the fireworks in context and scale.

They're all nice shots - as other have said No 4 is fantastic, but I also like no 2, the lighter sky at the top balances things out nicely.

If you want to see them "in context and scale" try the original thread... not this one!

A bit of perspective compression going on in those ones what with the distance to subject etc

As opposed to...
