Camera in hand luggage?

Going to Barcelona tomorrow for a few days and I'm obviously taking the camera, is it still okay to take it on as hand luggage, not sure, what with all these restrictions still in place.

I'm only taking the 350D, kit lens, couple of batteries and a couple of CF cards, got the Lowepro TLZ mini to save taking the big bag!

Thanks

Dave

Re: Camera in hand luggage?

Yup camera's are fine to take on as hand luggage. Suprisingly, even tripod's are allowed (obviously you need to make sure your one bag is inside the baggage size limits.

Re: Camera in hand luggage?

Hand luggage is also just as easy to target by thieves .. Heathrow seems to have a no of sleek ones doing the rounds
Beware and remain very watchful
2 weeks ago, one of my friends just coming in from the US was relieved of 2 cameras, a camcorder and $4000 off his hand luggage at Heathrow

Re: Camera in hand luggage?

No problems at all with hand lugage - personally put the rechargers in the hold lugage just in case they got funny about the plugs but it may not have been a problem.

Personally would rather risk pickpockets than bagage chuckers & potential thieves

Personally , Id rather have neither .
Hand luggage is safer to be sure

Until that incident ( after which the Police then recounted several others in recent times, Id have thought it absolutely safe)

I just made the point to alert the OP that even hand luggage is not a guarantee from "thieving scum"

Re: Camera in hand luggage?

Thanks for the advice, we're flying from Glasgow Prestwick so hopefully pickpockets won't be a problem there, but I'm told Barcelona is very bad for them, especially on Las Ramblas!!

Doesn't matter what city you go to, wether its Rome, Barcelona, NYC, London and so on, its a problem in all cities, especially those cities popular with tourists. Just be vigilant and not paranoid especially where people gather, i.e. around a street performer. Most thiefs/pickpockets are opportunists, so don't give them an easy opportunity, for example in a restaurant be careful where you set down bags, dont leave them where someone can easily snatch it, if you set down your bag at your feet, keep one leg inside the bag strap. Also dont keep all your money in one pocket, keep some in your shoes too.

I've been to Barcelona, Rome, Prague, London, Paris, Dublin and so far I have been ok.

The La Ramblas is very nice, heres a few photos I took

Re: Camera in hand luggage?

Nice Pics those!

I lost a lens (17- 40 L) at LAX ( Los Angeles International Airport) ..too . The camera bag was left on the floor momentarily to take pictures..

The thieves were gracious enough to leave the extra battery . other lens and Cf cards!!

Re: Camera in hand luggage?

on a more positive note, a friend of mine, a sports photographer for the Mail had 2 Eos 1D's handed in to lost property at heathrow after he left his bag hanging on the back of a trolley in the carpark. He managed to keep hold of his laptops and lenses though.

There is some hope!

Re: Camera in hand luggage?

I suppose a Lowe Pro Mini Trekker and a tripod would be pushing it?
Can pack the tripod if necessary, but i'd rather have it with me.

Indeed just enough to keep me hopeful that there are good people abouts even if they are not that many

Re: Camera in hand luggage?

I flew to Barcelona from Glasgow Prestwick too, and although there were no problems in the airport, my dads friend was pick-pocketed around the harbour area whilst getting on a bus. Just be wary as when you get onto the bus you're not really thinking of whats in your pocket, and once you're on the bus and they've ran you have absolutely no idea of what has happened. Anyway, I'm sure you'll have a great time. Hope the weather is decent, it rained all week in October 05.

Thanks, Scharf.
