Last evening I experimented for the first time with slow shutter speeds and without a tripod. Here are a couple of results.

I've not got around to trying this yet so was interested to see how yours came out.
The speed of 1/25 looked ok to convey the impression of speed but when viewing in full it's clear that a tripod is needed to keep everything else in focus.

I noticed that too, Steve N, which is the reason why I've just been out and bought a tripod.
I'll keep that in mind for next time, Gadget Daddy.

As an experiment they have done what you set out to achieve so well done on that front. You will get much better results with a tripod (or even an IS lens) so keep practicing!

It's worth setting the camera to manual, setting the aperture to a lot smaller than f/3.8 with a shutter speed to expose correctly and getting infront of something that moves consistently (a stream for instance) to see what different settings have on the implication of movement in the image

highly recommend getting a tripod for these type of shots. Just try experimenting with different shutter speeds in different situations i.e flowing river, long exposures at night of moving cars etc

It's a start anyway. Just try experimenting with different shutter speeds and different subjects with different techniques. Remember anything at all that moves can be drastically different from what the human eye see's by using a long exposure be that 1second or 1 hour.

You deffinately need to have a tripod to appreciate the full creativities of photography. I literally could not live without my tripod. Saying that remember you can move the camera aswell to get more possibilities with long exposure. For your car shots you could have panned with the car which would have given a sharp car and blurred background.

Good man - nothing like a bit of experimentation. You'll definitely have more room to manouver shutter-speed-wise with your new tripod.

Watch your exposure though. You've got half the pic with a bright sky, and half with a dull road. The camera has tried to average both out so you've overexposed the sky and underexposed the road. Next time, try and fill the frame with a consistent level of light (getting on an overhead bridge and looking down for example) and see what you get.

I had ago at this a while ago also.

Exposure: 1 sec (1)
Aperture: f/8
Focal Length: 5.2 mm
ISO Speed: 80

Shortly after this I found out that my sensor is a bit smaller than the normal size its a 1/2.5 crop

I took these following photos this evening using the new tripod that I bought. When viewing them in large size the difference is very noticable compared to the former photos. C&C welcome.
