less ambiguous thread titles please!

Is it just me, or is it a little frustrating when the page is full of 'some from yesterday' or 'feedback welcome' threads?

Some of what!? Feedback on what!?

Please can people give an idea of what is in the thread? I guess there will be photos, but of what?

Maybe I'm not interested in tomatoes so I can save some time by avoiding that thread. Or perhaps I love photos of tomatoes but passed by that thread becuase it didn't tell me anything.

OK, grump over for now :P

So I'm guessing "A few from yesterday" doesn't count....

Hold your mouse over the thread title. It gives the first paragraph of the content. Should stop you wasting so much time clicking uninteresting links!

Re: less ambiguous thread titles please!

Maybe some clever person could come up with a title generator. I think that would solve all issues.

I try and pop into most threads, not fussed about 'Some shots from yesterday' type titles myself.

Re: less ambiguous thread titles please!

i don't mind the "a few from yesterday" type titles

i try to look at most threads and enjoy looking at other peoples work so that i can get ideas for future photos, help to improve my photos or provide constuctive feedback for the user

at the end of the day we're one big community and should help each other out where we can by providing info or feedback for each other

Re: less ambiguous thread titles please!

It also helps with searches etc though don't forget. I personally have soo little work on right now I look at all threads but it would help if the titles were a little more descriptive. I use the mouseover trick but this doesn't always work [stupid IE7].

That is a very good point, though generally I do tend to title my pictures and add a short description of where they were taken which would also be picked up.

But that's simple...from your thread title I'd just say Canon without reading it

Gets crash helmet ready for Nikon abuse on the way

I agree with you on this one Richard. "A few from yesterday"...yeah whatever. However if it said "a few from xxxxx waterfall" or "long exposures of xxxxx" then I would be much more likely to look & remember*.

Im sure some more imagination in the title after you made the effort to take the images, PP them, upload them then embed them here for view is not a lot to ask for...really
I (sometimes mind..) feel sorry for the hapless mod who has to scan all of the threads
Saying that, some imaginatively named threads have some rather lacklustre efforts while some threads with rather boring tiles have gems!

Re: less ambiguous thread titles please!

Yeah its quite frustrating these ambigious titles, they occur on all the sub forums on here, especially the projectors and plasma threads.

Just been looking at at some old threads

1) somebody stop me - Stop you from what ?
2)What is this - What is what ?
3) Does this exist - Does what exist ?
4) Am i crazy - Why ?
5) Can i get all this - All what ?

Apologies to whoever started them threads, no offence intended, i just could not resist it

Re: less ambiguous thread titles please!

I would extend Richard's OP and suggest that a critique sub-forum is created. Technical questions get lost in, what is now predominantly, a critique forum. And yes, I agree that thread titles could be more descriptive.

Less ambiguous thread titles please!

Whay are you trying to say !!!

Only kidding.

A few weeks ago I joined another forum (non AV/Photo)
The rules stated that all titles MUST give and indication of content or would be deleted.
The reason given was that members wishing to search for a subject or re-visit an old thread would find it easier.
I actually thought it was a good rule and works really well.

Well, no one has picked up on this post yet, so i had better come clean, all the above threads were by our friend RICHARD PLUMB

No offence intended Richard, just wanted to point out that we all do it at some time or other

Steve N made a good point though about if you want to search for a thread ameaningful title helps. I guess if someone posts pics there's no harm in putting a few from yesterday, some from the weekend etc but I guess if someone has a techie question and put "problem with camera" thats not the most helpful title whereas if it was "my nikon D40 won't switch on" then that's more meaningful

Re: less ambiguous thread titles please!

I agree it would be more helpful to have more descriptive thread titles for those who who are only interested in specific subjects, but its not a major issue as i think most of us have look at all threads out of curiosity anyway.

It was not a pop at Richard or anyone else, i just felt for weaviemx as his thread title was seemingly being used as an example and i was just redressing the balance.

Thanks Bodoman, although I'm pretty thick-skinned...must be my Scouse humour that gets me through...

Just my luck that the first time I post a thread with a non-descript title I get gripped Oh well, it's good to know that we all do the same at one time or another, just some of us don't post about it

Now all I need to do is spend more time thinking about my title than taking my pictures!

Cheers
Steve

Re: less ambiguous thread titles please!

When you click to post a new thread there is the info:

For the benefit of everyone using the forums, the title of your thread should reflect its contents. Titles are extremely important - they are used as the title of the page, by search engines, our search facility, and in new post email notifications.

so I don't think it's too much for Richard to bring it up. I know when I (as requested in the rules) search the forum for any posts that may have already answered a question I may have, it can be a bit frustrating to have to go in to every thread returned because the title doesn't make it obvious that an answer could be found within.

That said, sometimes we just want a bit of a chat loosely related to a subject or just show what we've been up to. I guess if we are a bit more title specific about technical stuff, equipment or large image posts then we can still get away with a bit of vagueness (is that a word?) generally.
