Canon 350D or 400D?

I'm about to take a leap into D-SLR photography and have read through all the (many) posts on here on which camera for a novice and have decided to go for a 350D - as they are pretty cheap at Jessops - I'm on quite a tight budget.

The only slight thing which is worrying me is whether I should scrape a bit more cash together and go for a 400D. I know it has an extra 2mp (which doesn't bother me in the slightest), but is there any killer feature which means I should scrape together the extra dosh?

I'v discounted the D40 as I'm concerned about the lens issue, and I am tempted by the sony a100 - but it seems too expensive in Black, and seeing as I'm spending a fair bit of cash I don't see why I should have a colour which'll annoy me for the next 5 years or so!

Thanks for your help in advance,

Tom

Re: Canon 350D or 400D?

Apart from the 2Mp ( and the self cleaning feature) . it also has a larger brighter LCD screen, and has "picture styles" as well as a better AF system like the 30D. Some dont like the loss of an status LCD ( 350 and 30D) but you can get used to doing without it. It also has a larger buffer meaning you can shoot a bit more before the buffer fills up!

I found that higher ISO images seemed to be a bit noisier (marginally , and easily removed in DPP) than with 350D ( this is nitpicking as I also perhaps unconsciously compare it to the 30D) .
Interpreted in the right context, neither camera is really noisy at all

Also although it is marginally faster than the 350D, occasionally when shooting the larger file sizes it doesn't "feel" faster when shooting RAW or Largest size Jpeg.

If I were buying now, I would buy the 400D.
I wouldn't however advise a 350D owner to buy one as an upgrade .. I think it is at least as good if not better than the 350D but to what extent is a matter of degree.
Unless there is a significant price difference, the 400D would be my first choice

I do have a 350D, have used a 400D a lot and also own a 30D

Cheers for the info, you've given me a bit to think about - I'm still not sure tho, is the 400d worth the extra 100 quid?

Re: Canon 350D or 400D?

Don't forget there is a £50 cashback promotion at the moment, so the difference may only be £50.

If the difference is down to anything around £50, then you really should just go for the 400d (I have one and absolutely love it.....nice size, easy to use, loads of creative options etc). All depends on budget I suppose. I was considering the 350d as well, but decided to scrape a little more ca$h together to get the update on that model.

Best of luck with your decision

Re: Canon 350D or 400D?

Ditto with that - you might as well get the newer one if you can get the cash.

However, if you can get a 350D really cheap (they must be able to do you a deal as they'll be really keen to get rid of them), and you accept that eventually you'll upgrade to the next level (a 30D), then you can get a nice introduction to dSLRs at a very reasonable price.

Why not consider a 2nd hand one as well? Might be a big saving off the new price. Check your friendly eBay.
