Foot & Mouth down the road

Just managed to get right up to the main press area (me being a freelance photog suddenly) and got a load of pics. Uploading some to Scoopt now. More later.

Amazing - it's all kicking off in sleepy Surrey.

Re: Foot & Mouth down the road

Lets hope the government manage to do the right things to contain it this time. apart from the national repercussions /selfishmode that'll be both of my major hobbies well restricted if they start putting in the kind of movement restrictions we had 2001.

How did you convince them you are a freelance photographer? Just stick you 70 - 200 on?

Re: Foot & Mouth down the road

lets hope the government get their fingers out and learn from their mistakes last time. Alot of my friends farms got foot and mouth last time round and it was awful. Lets hope they're not letting people too close to the farm otherwise people are just going to spread it and make things worse

Re: Foot & Mouth down the road

It's going to devastate the rural communities around here. The blanket ban on transport that has been imposed will ruin all the village shows that are so important to this area.

Re: Foot & Mouth down the road

Just got back in again. I've been bigging it up with AP, Getty, Reuters etc etc you name it. Monster press coverage down here. I took my laptop with me, latched onto someone's free wifi, and splurged a bunch of pics onto Scoopt, which is owned by Getty. Some are apparently up on Getty as well - need to check.

Will put some on here in a bit...

So give it a couple of days and you'll have made enough retire on then?

Hope ya get some decent money out of it. Looks like you've put in a fair bit of effort.

Although I was too young to fully appreciate the problems caused by the last out brake I sincerely hope this one is just an isolated case.

a major show in cumbria was cancelled today and it looks like the others planned for the coming weeks will now be effected

it's a shame that so many people are effected by this from farmers to local businesses etc Our village festival has had to be toned down now due to the restrictions on livestock movement but i was earlier when I heard someone saying i won't complain if foot and mouth happens again as i'll be rubbing my hands with all the money i'll get cleaning all the farms again and slaugthering. No one should be allowed to make money from these type of events

Re: Foot & Mouth down the road

Farms around here (Staffordshire) got hit badly too .. my bosses whole herd had to be killed because it was in the area .. none of the cows were confirmed cases, and nobody from an infected farm had come in any contact whatsoever. But so it was ruled, so it had to be. He regularly speaks about having to kill the cows himself, and the whole ordeal ruined his father, the farm was his life.

Are there any reports yet on how it got there?

from bbc.co.uk

The strain of foot-and-mouth disease found at a Surrey farm has been identified, Defra has said.

The strain detected in infected cattle is identical to that used at the Institute for Animal Health, at Pirbright, three miles from the farm.

Defra could not say the laboratory was the source but has increased the size of the protection and surveillance zones covering farms in the area.

An urgent assessment of biosecurity has begun at the institute.

Re: Foot & Mouth down the road

Pirbright was the first thing I thought of when I saw which part of Surrey the farm was (vaguely remember going to the farm myself ages ago too)

I've grown up on a farm, and been around farmers in the area for a long time, none of which are even in farming anymore as alot of the dairy industry has just closed in Surrey over the last few years
Luckily none of the cows on the farm I live on were affected last time

That's rather worrying if it did inadvertantly come from Pirbright especially when you consider that there are other laboritries in the UK that deal with virusus that could cause pandemics amongst humans.
It's very sad that farmers have to go through this again so soon after the last outbreak. Lets hope it's contained and that it doesn't spread further.

Re: Foot & Mouth down the road

Yes indeed - very strange goings on if that's where it came from. Someone will need to get a very major slap!

Here's some pics I can show of the general media melee...

#1 closed footpath

#2 media scrum

#3 Sky media presenter checking with his news desk, road closed in the background

#4 nervous lady being interviewed live on BBC News24

#5 BBC cameraman - like the lens hood

#6 BBC dude

#7 Sky dude

#8 Policeman setting up a cordon

Might have a wander around today as well to see what I can find.

Was he a bit wobbly ? Actually noticed whilst watching a report from the fella in the picture on Sky News in the afternoon that the lighting on him was all over the place like someone was switching the camera light on & off all the time !

I can see there is proper photographer there - even if he is using ancient D1 & D1x. Obviosuly Nikon gear is so good, on is immune to upgraditis

So great shots there Tobers - including some nice generic stock shots.

Yes he was actually. Whilst on the other side of the road the BBC crew had a reflector set up on a proper raised tripod-like facility, plus a massive bus with kit in. The Sky guys had a little transit!

Re: Foot & Mouth down the road

Went out again this afternoon to see if I could get anything that the main press pack had missed. I ended up with another 6 pics uploaded to Scoopt and then they put them on Getty Check www.scoopt.com -> gallery -> breaking news international for a shuftie or click here.

I had a good chat with the Sun photographer who was a bit of a lad. We had a good wander through the woods trying to find an intriguing angle on the Pirbright lab. Nothing doing though unfortunately.

I did go back to the originating farm and found a "DEFRA animal health officer" on guard duty and took his pic a few times. It's amazing how people will do what you ask them to do. He was standing in the shade causing a major exposure headache. I asked him to move into the sunshine which he did very happily. Amazing. I had my battery grip on the 30D to look a bit more "pro"

I've applied to 3 freelance associations to get a press card. What a laugh that would be if I could get one. Ha ha ha!!!

By the way, there's a lady who is the main Getty photographer called Cate and she is rather gorgeous, very young, but gets to locations bloody quickly and takes top pics. Damn!
