I'm going a bit crazy!!

Ok, so I've started editing some RAW images in DPP…...
At first I noticed a problem whereby I was saving the new image into TIFF format but then when I opened my new TIFF image and went back to compare it to my newly edited image still displayed in DPP, it didn't look as good as what it was in DPP. Now the problem I'm seeing is when I open my saved TIFF image through Microsoft Office Document Imaging it looks much better than when I view the same image, but opening it through DPP.

I've noticed that the few images I've tried to change through DPP look better contrast wise etc, but it's like they have more dust created on them somehow. And I'm talking dust where there's just no chance of getting rid of it all!

What am I doing wrong!?

Re: I'm going a bit crazy!!

Why are you using microsoft office imaging?!

Can you post an example of this "dust"?

and it might have something to do with your respective colour spaces in the individual programs and the colour setting you are shooting in.

Microsoft office imaging is just the programme that it opens my newly saved TIFF image in. I'm not using it for anything else

I'd struggle to find a way to post a picture with the dust on (if that in fact is the correct word for what I'm seeing!) because it's only when I open the image through DPP that I see a difference compared to when it opens through MOI.

Do a screen print, it's just hard to work out the problem without seeing it.

Re: I'm going a bit crazy!!

I took some scans quite some time ago and they looked completely different in the scanning app compared to how MS Imaging showed them.

I prefered the look in MS Imaging, but I don't think it was actually an accurate representation of the image. 'Proper' editing software showed the image as quite a bit darker.

Ok, hopefully these attachments will work! Had to do some resizing to meet the 120kb upload requirement!

Thanks to Stoo31 for his help!

Re: I'm going a bit crazy!!

It's digital noise, it's very strange, looks like DPP is auto adjusting the preview and because it is dark it is upping the exposure, that's the only thing I can think of.

I also found it happening when I started to mess about with this (attached) image. To the left of the house and above the hut, where it's dark, I noticed a similar change and the noise had more or less little bright orange/red specks. I tried to use the dust stamp but there was just way too much.

(attached image is original, as I got a bit frustrated with what was going on, so didn't save any changes!)

Re: I'm going a bit crazy!!

What camera are you using?

Because it is dark and you were probably using quite a high ISO this is what happens, some camera handle the resulting noise better than others. You also need to get the exposure spot on.

I've got a 400D mate.
Bearing in mind these were literally some of the first photos I had taken with it. Without any prior knowledge I was just messing about with the ISO and shutter speed until I got a photo which looked slightly good!
I was wondering whether I was just having these problems because the photos I'd taken were rubbish!

Re: I'm going a bit crazy!!

lol, not rubbish, if these are the first you have taken then I'd go out and take some in daylight and practice the exposures, and then check that the software isn't doing anything silly.

I would recommend setting any "auto" function to off (I'm not too hot with DPP as I only used it a couple of times so can't remember if this applies) to begin with when first looking at images because then you will see the image as you have taken it (pretty much) and then you can make adjustments accordingly.

Hope this is some help, it's very much trial and error but that's half the fun!

Re: I'm going a bit crazy!!

I had a similar problem recently with noisy pictures and DPP. When I'd saved them as JPEGs and opened them in Windows Picture viewer they were fine.

I assumed that DPP always opens the unaltered version of the file as someone told me (here I think) that the noise reduction is applied after conversion. I may be wrong.

I wish I could go and take those shots again, but unfortunately they're from Brazil! I know what you mean though........

In DPP it usually displays the "shot setting" first and then you can change it to "auto" and a few other options. The photo does tend to look a bit better when I select the "auto" option. So perhaps that's another reason it's going wrong!
