Do it all software

Is there a single piece of software that will simply (talking one button here folks) import from camera to PC, store and sort, edit and print with a choice of layouts and burn to CD. PS have looked at Elements - far too complicated for me, (too many non-intuitive buttons per screen.)

ACDSee is what you need. I belive you might be able to pick up a demo from the website.

ACDC Suite may be able to I cant tell now as I deinstalled mine a while ago so Im not that sure

Similarly Im not sure why you find Elements a bit "non"- intuitive ( You are not alone, a lot of my friend are similarly bewildered till I actually show them.. then it becomes easy).. There are loads of resources ( Books, Videos Magazines) to get you familiar with it.. You don't have to use all its buttons.. just the one you need
If you do wish to learn it PM me for a CD with video tutorials but it is meant to be User friendly ( Far more so than Photoshop itself)

Seriously though:
Importing and storing Images
Sorting ( Cataloguing)
Editing..means different things to different people.. enhacing and image can result in different finished outputs
Printing ( with various Layouts)
Burning to CD
Are actually very different time consuming tasks with several variables;

Most people want some control over the process , some more than others so
Im not sure how desirable software that would auto mate this ( and get it wrong more than a few times) would be .
Even ACDC is a suite of programs which complement each other but can be used individually and is not ( I think) as auto mated as you seem to wnt it to be)

I run ACDSee version 9 and always have run ACDSee, I also run bridge and photoshop cs3. ACDSee is for a very quick view, bridge for some tweaking and cs3 for mainly other bits.

Elements is quite good and ACDSee is very different, I would say its more of a image viewer than anything else. It has tons of backup and auto tools, I use its Dup feature which is excellent.

A demo can be found here

What is the Dup feature?

My main use for ACDC ( before I deinstalled it : registry error) was the Excellent Photo Layout which was similar to one Id used with an older HP Printer : Very quick to use and easy to make Albums from a series of Photos
As you've stated Elements too has a lot of hidden gems including archiving , backup

I wasn't so much as knocking ACDC, merely trying to gently tell the OP that his list of automated requirments for any one software was a bit daunting
and as such it might be worth learning one to take over for himself some of his desired "functions"

Re: Do it all software

Sorry folks. I think you are overestimating my desire to interact with software. I am one of those who uses perhaps 2% of the things Word can do. I don't care about the other 98%, just as long as it will do the 2% that I need.
I don't do amazing editing, I am not a photographer, I go on holiday and take loads of pictures. I want to keep them all on my PC. Some of them I might want to crop a bit, or brighten up a bit, or even deal with red-eye. Some of them I might want to print as an album (4 to a page of A4). And some I might want to burn onto CD to view on my lovely new LCD.
All I want is a single (not a suite) program that will have just the buttons I need to do those simple things. I don't even mind paying if it is fast, simple and elegant.

Re: Do it all software

Why not have a look at Picasa 2, it's free, does a reasonable job of organising and has simple 'one-click' touch up tools.
Get it here ... http://picasa.google.co.uk/

Re: Do it all software

Adobe Lightroom

Auto-import on camera plug-in. Keywording for whole import. Organising into collections, rating, keyword search etc etc. Printing with whatever layout you want. Export to web sites using FTP in Flash or HTML (very cool). Non-destructive editing, cloning, sharpening, colours, white balance, B&W conversion etc etc. Also you can do editing on multiple pics at once (e.g. removing dust spots on all pics from a shoot - do it on one pic and Lightroom does the rest for you).

Download the trial and trial it! Superb.

Duplicate Feature.

I understand, you can only use what you find works for you. Like you said Elements has loads of resources which ACDSee lacks ! Thats a bonus when only starting out.

Re: Do it all software

For what you are describing, Picasa seems the way to go, it's very much a straightforward piece of software built for people who want to organise snaps and is very intuitive.

Yeah, Picasa also gets my vote, simple to use, does the stuff you are on about, oh and it's free!

..
I fully understand your desire to remain innocently unaware of what software can do as long as you can get from a to b with minimum hassle
I don't think there is any misunderstanding there. I think all of us would love the easiest way to achieve a task..What is easy to one person can prove to be a major hassle to another

I hope from the suggestions above you'll find 1 (or maybe 2) which together can help you out. This single "do it all" may not exist in the way you visualise it but try them out.. you never know.....and your needs may change

Despite their apparent complexity though many of the titles have an " easyfix" option

The software designers aim is to make them easy to use with the option open to the more curious to do more:
It is how they succeed in this aim that differs. Ironically some freebees prove more challenging than paid for software
Anyway Good luck
If you ever get to the point of being curious about Elements feel free to get in touch

Re: Do it all software

Thanks everyone. Have downloaded Picasa. It is much better than the version I tried a couple of years ago, and seems to do everthing that I want. The only thing I would like to add to it is an automatic reminder to save after editing.
Thanks again
Alan
