Making money from photos

Hi.

I'm not sure whether this is the right forum to post in, but I figured some of you sell your pictures in one format or another.
I have been thinking about making a bit of pocket money from my pictures by making cards to sell in our local newsagents. I was just wondering about any legal necessities and permissions to make money from photos. I guess public spaces, flowers etc are ok but how about things like churches, stately homes and other public buildings. Would I need permission to a, take the picture and b, make money from it?
What about private residences? There are lots of interesting houses in the village where I live. Would I need to ask the owners permission to take the picture and then sell it? I probably wouldn't take the whole house, just an interesting front door or stonework etc.
There seems to be a potentially large can of worms with this one.
Anybody any ideas.
