New flash kit

Evening everyone.

Well my flash and wireless trigger have arrived and I had a few minutes earlier this evening to play with them.

Thought I would try to freeze the motion of some water drops with the flash off-camera:

Drip

Drop

Splash

I had some fun making these shots first though:

Flash in the Pan

Put a Lid On It

Not quite up there with Gordon's Lambo photographs, but I enjoyed making them all the same.

Cheers.

Wow! Those are excellent. The water drop ones are so precise.

Flash in the pan - very very good

Yep - very nice indeed, top quality stuff. 'Drop' and the 'Flash in the Pan' shots are really fantastic. So sharp!

Lovely shots. Drip & flash in the pan being my faves. Your toilet has horns like the devil!!!

How did you get the focus so bang on in the water drop shots?

Re: New flash kit

You put the flash in the toilet? Please tell me you didn't... And it triggered? I thought Canon used IR - needing line of sight?

Nice stuff though Now go get someone to sit for you

I think I pretty much fluked it! The shots were hand held but the flash allowed for 1/250th which obviously helped a lot. They were at f/11 so DOF wasn't too shallow and I estimated manual focus as close as I could get to directly below the tap head. I then fired off a few in continuous shot mode and picked the best ones. Fortunately, the flash fired every time so increased my chances of getting some interesting shapes.

Haha. Yes I did - pretty much from opening the box to putting it down the toilet! It was placed on an old saucer so it couldn't slip into the water and the toilet was freshly clean - honestly!

I put a brand new CR5 battery into the ST-E2 and fully charged AA's into the flash and I was amazed at where you could position the flash relative to the trigger. Obviously, it bounces off walls to trigger the flash but it even triggered it with the toilet seat down. I am still waiting on some Cactus RF remotes (Link given to me by Allymac - thanks ) but I think I'm only going to need to use them when the flash is in a different room and bouncing the IR won't reach it or perhaps outside in bright daylight. We'll see.

The flash is a Canon 580EXII and the trigger is the Canon ST-E2.

Thanks again everyone.

Cheers.

Re: New flash kit

Keith

Saw these on your Flickr site...absolutely fantastic.

Mr Sweetgirl bought me a Flash (SB800) from the B&H.

Havent used it yet... will take it out at the weekend and have a play.

You have inspired me to take some water droplet shots.

Love the Pan shot.

Great work.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

The RF ebay triggers that Allymac recommended were only £18 delivered from China so well worth a purchase.
