Panorama comparison: Canon Photostitch -v- Adobe CS3

A lot has been made of CS3's new layer blending stitching facility. Well, I thought I'd try it out. I took 4 vertical pics of the "cheap" marina on the other side of Monaco's old town, and stitched one together using the Canon Photostitch software, and the other with CS3.

Of course, when taking the pics I forgot to lock the exposure & shutter speed, making the task even more difficult for the software packages.

So, here's Photostitch's attempt (click for original size)...

...and here's CS3's attempt (with some saturation boost post-stitching):

Pretty impressive from CS3 I think you'll agree!! Seamless sky, and absolutely spot on joins (i.e. invisible) in all the details of the boats and apartments. Straight horizon. Also, the amount of detail you get from stitching together a number of 8mpx shots is quite amazing. If you look at the full size pic you'll see what I mean.

Is photostitch different to autostitch? I'm sure it was you that pointed me in the way of autostitch before?

Anyway I think its clear CS3 has done a top notch job. Although photostitch does seems to have a pretty bad job. Just look at that sea!! It's like the Himalaya's!!

Auto stich is not photstitch , Photstich is Canons freebee . Autostitch is an in dependent 3rd party software
The CS3 example is so much better but it does cost a few £s more
Now a comparison with autostitch would make for completeness

Re: Panorama comparison: Canon Photostitch -v- Adobe CS3

Pretty gobsmacking isn't it. Especially as the 4 shots were handheld as well, at 17mm too so lots of wide-angle distortion.

I might try an 8-shot 4x2 or a 12 shot 4x3 and see how I get on.

Re: Panorama comparison: Canon Photostitch -v- Adobe CS3

I am really surprised how good this is. Looking at where the stitches are in the photostitch version and then looking on the full size PS3 version - I can't see the joins at all! I may have just found my ideal solution - unfortunately that means I've got about 50 sets of stitches to do which have been sat in the wings waiting.

It's part of the main program, and is very cool. I've joined shots i've taken of places years apart.

I have found that Autostitch works really well, much better than Photostitch.

Any we can have a looksy at? This one looks really good. A touch over-saturated maybe (somewhere between the photostitch and CS3 versions would be my personal preference, but it's not my shot ) but excellently combined and composed. Really quite impressive!

I've had shots that autostitch handled far, far better than photostitch but I've also had ones that photostitch did well and autostitch baulked at. The CS3 results are very interesting though. A lot of cash to pay though!

Re: Panorama comparison: Canon Photostitch -v- Adobe CS3

I got autostitch a few months ago after seeing it's skills demo'd on this forum. My experience with Canon's offering was similar to Tobers, no rollercoaster horizon but plenty visible joins in the sky. Autostitch had no such problems. IMHO it's a very useful and simple bit of software.

Re: Panorama comparison: Canon Photostitch -v- Adobe CS3

I've just redone a couple of my panos using Panorama Maker 3 that was bundled with my FZ8. Previously, I'd just lined them up manually, and they looked a bit pants, but Panorama Maker has worked wonders. I've stuck them up on my Flickr here and here. I haven't done any PP on them yet though.
