D80 Users Mirror Lock

D80 Mirror Lock.

First time i have payed any attention to the Mirror Lock.

I see mine is set to On, when trying to change it to off-ok, It just goes back to On. I thought the idea of the mirror lock was for cleaning purpose.

If you are a D80 user how is yours set ?.

not got mine in front of me but from memory you just highlight ON and press OK. Then you press the shutter button and the mirror raises. If the battery is a bit low you wont be able to do this, in fact you wont even get the option

Hi I just looked at mine. I don't think its on really. When you highlight mirror lock then right on the d-pad it just so happens that on is highlighted in yellow. its not actually on unless you go right on d-pad again and some writing comes up telling you too press shutter button to make it lock up and to turn the camera off to reset it. I see what you mean though. it does at first make you think it is on. Maybe they should have had the off highlighted first. And yes I think mirror lock is for cleaning purposes.

Thanks for the replies, I understand the use of the mirror lock for cleaning purpose, i am told there is an "exposure delay mode" where the shutter releases 0.4secs after the mirror lifts to reduce risk of camera shake. (Page 99 in manual) however it is a little confusing as there is no need for No on the mirror lock because it doesn't do anything, or at least that's how it appears.

If it's the same as the D200, you turn it on, press the shutter, and the mirror and shutter curtain will raise. You turn the camera off to return to normal operation. If you've accidentally activated it, just press the shutter, then turn off (check the sensor cleaning section of the D80 manual though just in case it's different!)

The D80 doesn't have true mirror lockup mode for shooting, just the delay mode. (you need a D200 to get that)

I am told the D80 and D200 mirror lock are different, It seems the main reason for the Mirror Lock is for cleaning the sensor.

But i still see no reason for a Mirror Lock -NO in the menu, as it does nothing.

Just spent ages trying to work out why I couldn't select mirror lock on my D80...then finally worked out the battery is too low.

My guess is it's bad interface design, and no possibly cancels the lockup request.
